If you had started to worry about patent sharks going after Linux and Open Source distribution sites, you will be interested to hear that Geeknet, which owns SourceForge, freshmeat, Geek.com, ThinkGeek, and Slashdot, has just joined Open Invention Network as a licensee. From the press release: "Geeknet is a leading resource for open source software development and distribution," said Scott Collison, Chief Product Officer of Geeknet. "We believe that by becoming an Open Invention Network licensee, we encourage further open source development and promote innovation in a technical community that benefits everyone." Once again, we see OIN doing what it has set out to do, try to protect the Linux ecosystem. When you are swimming with sharks, it helps to be inside a protective cage, which is why you have seen a lot of folks joining recently, including
Fluendo.
The press release:

Geeknet Joins Open Invention Network as Licensee
Durham, NC and Mountain View, CA (November 10, 2010) Geeknet and Open Invention Network (OIN) today announced the signing of Geeknet as an OIN licensee. OIN's mission is to enable and protect Linux. By becoming a licensee, Geeknet, the online network for the global geek community through sites such as SourceForge and Slashdot, has joined the growing list of companies that recognize the importance of participating in a substantial community of Linux supporters and leveraging the Open Invention Network to further spur open source innovation.
"Geeknet is a leading resource for open source software development and distribution," said Scott Collison, Chief Product Officer of Geeknet. "We believe that by becoming an Open Invention Network licensee, we encourage further open source development and promote innovation in a technical community that benefits everyone."
Patents owned by Open Invention Network are available royalty-free to any company, institution or individual that agrees not to assert its patents against the Linux System. This fosters additional investment in, and adoption of, Linux, which in turn helps to fuel economic growth. By developing a web of Linux developers, distributors, sellers, resellers and end-users that license its patent portfolio, Open Invention Network is creating a supportive and open ecosystem for Linux.
OIN has amassed a broad portfolio of patents, including patents held by nominees on its behalf. These patents are available to all licensees as part of the patent portfolio that OIN is creating around and in support of Linux. Its license agreement can be found at

Just a thought - I would be willing to join and annually contribute to a
non-profit fund, foundation, or association that was actively engaged in the
pursuit of patent trolls. The idea would be to force them to spend money trying
to defend their invalid patents, rather than allow them to wait until someone
'infringed' their patent, and threaten the same on an innocent victim. [ Reply to This | # ]

This "fighting fire with fire" approach only validates the one(s) who
started the fire to begin with.
How can we make the public case that computer programs are all reducible to pure
math, hence are un-patentable, when we ourselves are owning and defending
patents on computer programs?
As for the shark cage, it's my opinion that the "sharks" in this case
are the lawyers who bent patent law to include mathematics, acting at the behest
of their manager bosses who didn't understand what they were managing.[ Reply to This | # ]

That Microsoft will try to make defensive patent groups like this illegal?
Or am I just to paranoid.
