SCO Press Conference Tomorrow - Updated
Monday, June 19 2006 @ 12:54 PM EDT

There's a new press release from SCO. On June 20th, SCO's CEO Darl McBride will tell the world about "a new investment program."

I have no idea if this means the PIPE Fairy left more money under SCO's pillow or if the company has figured out a new way for us to give them money, but we'll find out together on Tuesday at 9 AM, Eastern. Because the invitation says that software developers should attend, I'm leaning to the latter, but if the company is relying on software developers to help them along, I have my doubts how well that is going to work out for them. But hey, whatever.

Update: I've now been sent a copy of the invitation sent to one Groklaw member, and it calls the program a "New Developer Investment Opportunity." The Who Should Attend paragraph reads like this:

Software developers and members of the media and analyst community who cover SCO, development trends, and the development of mobile and wireless services and applications.

So it appears you coders will be offered an opportunity to make big money working from home. I'm guessing Me Inc. again.

Here's the press release.

Investment? Developers?
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 01:36 PM EDT
This must be some creative concept, getting developers to attend a meeting about investment. Possibilities:
  • developers pay licence fee and receive equity?
  • share issue related to supporting development?
  • code development now moved to Nigerian subsidiary. Develop now or you will be sued. Be paid later from proceeds of SCOG v IBM and spambot operations?
  • all your code belong us. Thanks for the investment of your blood sweat and tears.
  • more smoke and mirrors (my personal favourite)

Since the real value of a share in SCOG is probably worth -$5 or so, it strikes me as strange for anyone to consider investing more money (or anything in kind) in SCOG.

Having failed as a going software concern (not to mention ethics and plain old common sense), SCO are branching out into MLM (multi-level marketing) that probably involves their new spam-your-cell-phone-and-PDA Edge Click service.

I seem to recall ...
Authored by: rsteinmetz70112 on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 01:50 PM EDT
... that they were going to have some kind of program to pay developers to code
for them, a kind of auction or bounty or something. Perhaps this is a
developemnt of that SCO Developer Network.

SCOmarketplace
Authored by: _Arthur on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 01:51 PM EDT
Maybe they'll launch the long-awaited SCOmarketplace, that was supposed to
challenge the Open Source development model ??

More likely, they tie pyramidal sales of SCO-ME to stock options ?

Investment
Authored by: hardcode57 on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 01:51 PM EDT
The assumption is that this is a program for investment into SCO. Is this a good
assumption.

SCO's products have a shrinking developer base. What if they're proposing
investment in 3rd party app developers?

Obviously, they have no money actually to do so, but the PR is good, showing the
markets that they are addressing an issue, and actually think of themselves as
an ongoing business, and not just a litigation shop.

Divide and Conquer
Authored by: PhilFrisbie on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 02:16 PM EDT
This may be too cynical (even for SCO), but what if this new strategy is
something like this:

Offer developers free SCO licenses for software development and/or testing.

Later offer developers a look at the source code to better debug their
programs.

These developers that have looked at source code are now tainted, and all open
source code projects they contribute to can be targeted for 'methods and
concepts' lawsuits.

Of course, this assumes SCO is still around to sue anyone!

the development of mobile and wireless services and applications.

This makes me think it's perhaps something to do with their "Me Inc". Perhaps they're going to spin it off and offer stock? Or perhaps they've landed a new, large account for such services (does anyone know if, say, Microsoft uses such facilities to message their employees?)

Investment is one of their core competencies
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 02:54 PM EDT
Perhaps they're running how-to-get-rich seminars like the "own a plot in utah" infomercials.

SCO may not have any relevance as a software company; but they sure do have 1337 skilz when it comes to getting investment dollars.

Perhaps their new message is "software developers having a hard time finding a job --- come to us to learn how to swindle mucho dollars out of microsoft through their investment partners like BayStar, and paying your selves the big bonuses --- that's a much quicker way to get rich than actually making software".

I suspect they are going to...
Authored by: James Wells on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 02:57 PM EDT
Greetings,

I suspect they are going to do something similar to Google's Summer Of Code
program. They will offer all of the developers a chance to develop code for
stock instead of pay. SCO will then apply SCO's version of the open source
license to it. These developers will then have full visibility into ME, which
SCO will use to target real FOSS prjects that these developers work with for
various suits and "fees".

Perhaps their "white box" systems deal was so successful that they are going to recuit more representitives...

More likely, it will be some kind of "Invest in us and we'll pay big bucks when we beat IBM in court. 1000% return in investment and all you need do is buy a Linux license at only $600..."

I hate marketing people. hehe
Authored by: ThatBobGuy on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 03:16 PM EDT
Marketing people really bother my sensiblities.

The SCO Group (Nasdaq: SCOX)
*most of the time, depends on current status with SEC.*

is a leading provider
*leading WHO in what???*

Me Inc. and EdgeClick for mobile services.
*My wife is recieving spam text messages to her cell phone. Coincidence? I
think not*

SCO's highly innovative and reliable solutions help millions of customers
*Millions of customer? I would like to see that verified. Thier definition
must be VERY lose. Nothing new here, any "inovation" they claim was
done by IBM in the 70's.*

UnixWare on Wall Street
*Doesn't say what Unixware is actually doing. Could be the toilet paper
ordering system, foot prop, space heater... I'm certain is has nothing to do
with trading as that would require a cluster solution. WAIT, I have it!!!! Like
Autozone, they dumped it years ago, but did not notify SCO.. I smell lawsuit..*

SCO owns the core UNIX operating system, originally developed by AT&T/Bell
Labs and is the exclusive licensor to UNIX-based system software providers.
*but we are not really sure. We want to own it, but Novell says we can't have
it. Still looking for the paperwork. We are in litigation with Novel, and have
ordered them prove our case againt them. We are optimistic*

Headquartered in Lindon, Utah,
*WOOT, this part is true!!! You go boy*

SCO has a worldwide network of thousands of resellers and developers.
*Thousands of resellers? Maybe, people will sell anything, BUT, this could be
1,999 resellers and 1 devoloper and it would still be true. I'm certain this is
the reason they are lumped together.*

SCO Global Services provides reliable localized support and services to partners
and customers.
*198 employees, how Global can you get??? How many of them speak 5+ languages.
The definition of "customers" must have changed mid press release.
198 people supporting millions of customers?????? Customers is plural, so we'll
give benefit of the doubt and say just 2 million.. That is approx 10,000
customers per employee.. Granted this would include cleaning staff, executives,
etc...*

Yeah, this is a shot at SCO. Can be applied to just about any companies little

Mention of developers triggered a thought ...
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 06:58 PM EDT
I'm usually totally focussed on the endlessly entertaining court action here.

But mention of developers got me thinking.

Do we have on the site, somewhere that I may have missed, a breakdown of what
SCO actually is?

I mean we've got Darl and his close playmates on the board of the company, who
we of course know and love. And we've got the lawyers. And we've got the Pipe
Fairy (who we'd love to know!).

But I realised that I've got no idea of what and who else makes up the scam,
sorry, company. It's easy to forget that they apparently, allegedly, have actual
developers working on their code. Or alleged code. Or Linux. Whatever.

Anyone got a Powerpoint of the corporate hierarchy anywhere?

Possibly just a new promotional program.
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, June 19 2006 @ 08:20 PM EDT
This might be more along the lines of a joint promotional program involving SCO plus anyone who develops software that can possibly run on their OS. "Partners" in the program would get free mention in SCO's promotional activities, while all work on compatible software would get counted as "investment" in SCO's "platform" for PR purposes.

PR "investments" of course do not necessarily have any bearing on the sort of "investments" which accountants recognise, so this is not something that would show up on a balance sheet. There wouldn't necessarily be any actual new money from SCO (or anyone else) involved, just counting (and double counting) of any existing expediture which can conceivably be related to one of SCO's products. For example, since the MySQL database will run on an SCO OS, all of MySQL's expenditures could get counted as an "investment" in an SCO "platform" or "ecosystem". This lets SCO quote big "investment" numbers to the press without anyone actually spending any money.

If you look at SCO's web site, you will see that they are heavily promoting the use of MySQL, PHP, Perl, and Apache as part of the "SCAMP stack". They also mention Squid, Samba, Mozilla, VIM, OpenSSH, and PostgreSQL. If you add up all the development effort which went into these and other packages, you will probably find that tens to hundreds of millions of dollars have been "invested". SCO could for PR purposes count the entire development effort for these packages as part of an "investment" in SCO, simply because this software ships with Openserver.

This sort of tactic has been used to various degrees before by other computer and software companies (e.g. Intel with the Itanium) to try to make a moribund project look like it still had significant backing. Since SCO seems to be trying to revive their software business, they need to make it look as if Openserver and Unixware still have a future.

If this is the case, then take any future list of "partners" in such a promotional program with a grain of salt. Companies (and organisations) may not know that they are being counted an "investment partner".

P.S. If you want to see what SCO's opinion on the future of software is, have a look at the "Meta Group" analyst report they quote under the "SCO/MySQL Download Centre" (you'll have to look for it as I don't want to give their site a link). It states:

...mark(s) the "beginning of the end" for software licensing fees as a separately charged line item.

The business impact of this is that software as a service is evolving to impact the entire licensing and pricing model for enterprise software. Over time, this shift will lower software per-unit costs, improve customer support, and enable lower total cost of ownership.

There you have it. SCO believes in free software as the future of the enterprise software industry. It's right there on their web site in black and white. Somebody obviously forgot to tell Darl to cancell the lawsuit.

This is interesting....

... a leading provider of UNIX software technology for distributed, embedded and network-based systems

SCO is revealing their post-lawsuit business strategy.

Let's look in the crystal ball and see... what... yes, a picture is forming. I see a company in upheaval. I see people falling from high places. I see a new, smaller, but infinitely more benign, company emerge. I see a company forging partnerships where before they issued threats; a company with a business plan that doesn't mention litigation. A company with an actual product as base for offering services...

These people must have a strong belief in life after death

The EdgeClick SDK (aka EdgeBuilder) is due to hit beta in June according to
slide 10 of the "Me Inc. & Edgeclick Mobile Services" presentation
at http://au.sco.com/registration/presentations.html.

Could it be that the press release is to announce the SDK and invite developers
to create spam applications for free in exchange for a cut of future revenue?

Anyway, that's my guess.

SCO Kicks Off New Investment Program With 'The EdgeClick Developer Challenge'
Emphasizing the Creation of Mobile Applications Using the New EdgeBuilder SDK
and Providing an Additional $1,000 to Each Developer Who Attends SCO Forum

LINDON, Utah, June 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The SCO Group, Inc.
("SCO") (Nasdaq: SCOX - News) a leading provider of UNIX® software
technology for distributed, embedded and network-based systems, today announced
a significant new worldwide investment program that rewards developers for
creating innovative, new mobile applications for wireless handset devices using
the company's new EdgeBuilder software developer kit (SDK). To kickoff this new
program SCO has developed "The EdgeClick Developer Challenge" where

M5 or $100,000 USD in cash. There will also be 10 additional winners that
receive a significant cash prize.

SCO, Windows and Java developers are invited to attend SCO's 20th annual SCO
Forum conference and participate in "The EdgeClick Developer
Challenge" to create the next "killer application" or mobile
service. SCO will further invest in developers who attend Forum with a $1,000
bonus after completing their EdgeBuilder SDK training that will take place
during SCO Forum. To receive this bonus, developers must register for Forum by
July 15 as space is limited. For complete rules and qualifications for
participating in "The EdgeClick Developer Challenge" and to register
for SCO Forum, developers should visit www.edgeclickpark.com/challenge.

"During the last 25 years SCO has been committed to the UNIX platform and
continues to reaffirm its commitment to that platform. Thousands of developers
have created applications for the UNIX platform, and now we're inviting them
along with Windows and Java developers to take those legacy applications and
create new ones on our new EdgeClick platform," said Darl McBride,
president and CEO, The SCO Group Inc. "We have spent tremendous amounts of
time and resources developing and upgrading our technology and have designed the
developer investment program to make application mobilization quick, easy and
profitable for developers, partners and customers."

The EdgeBuilder SDK provides developers with many technologies and tools for
creating:

- mobile device clients
- application services that run on SCO's Edge Processor
- administration web pages for mobile applications
- connection agents for reaching into corporate data sources

In addition to gaining valuable training and education using SCO's EdgeBuilder
SDK, attendees of this year's SCO Forum will hear from leading industry
luminaries, analysts and thought leaders about the growing mobile device market
and the trends in developing mobile services and applications.

SCO Forum will take place August 6-9, 2006 at the Mirage Hotel and Convention
Center in Las Vegas. This year's conference, sponsored by HP®, MySQL®, and many
other partners, will also focus on the company's many UNIX-based solutions with
SCO OpenServer® and UnixWare®. The conference is attended by hundreds of
developers, resellers, industry hardware and software partners, system
integrators, distributors, customers, and members of the media and analyst
community.

Many breakout sessions and keynotes will focus on development platforms and web
services for designing and implementing mobile services, including
service-oriented architectures (SOA), Java, and many others. These EdgeClick
break out sessions will be particularly valuable to developers with previous
experience using .NET, C#, J2ME, SOAP, XML, SOA, SMS and GPRS/EDGE technologies,
protocols, and implementations.

"Developers are central to the success of any platform technology company
and this developer challenge is an investment by SCO in the developer community
and our research and development efforts," said Sandy Gupta, chief
technology officer and general manager for the platforms division, The SCO
Group, Inc. "By tapping into the talents and abilities of developers around
the world, SCO will create a marketplace and channel for the creation, selling
and distribution of mobile services and applications. According to In-Stat, as
the expected sales of wireless handsets increase each year to exceed more than
1.9 billion units in 2011, customers will embrace powerful new mobile solutions
created by these developers. The tools and training obtained at SCO Forum 2006
with the EdgeBuilder SDK will empower developers to quickly create powerful
mobile services and applications."

In connection with today's announcement, the company will hold a teleconference
for developers, media and analysts on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 11:00 a.m.
Eastern time. Darl McBride, president and CEO, and Sandy Gupta, general manager
and CTO, will provide further details and answer questions on the call.
Participants should dial toll free 1-800-289-0544 or use the toll number
