Feel Like a Movie? It's Under a Creative Commons License.
Saturday, October 01 2005 @ 08:43 AM EDT

A reader in Finland sent me this news: there is a new movie free for the download and under Creative Commons license, a parody of Star Trek, "Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning". You can view a trailer if your computer is up to it, or here's the trailer for all computer systems, at a lower quality level. Here's the description:
"An epic film about the emperor of the world in the far reaches of the galaxy."

The first Finnish full-length scifi parody is made from astounding special effects, action and loads of dark humour. It is the product of a core group of five Finns and many people who've helped us during the seven years it has been in the making. You can download the entire movie by clicking here. For free, of course.

It's in Finnish, naturally, but they have English subtitles, and to me they added to the enjoyment when I watched the trailer. I haven't had time to view the full movie itself, so don't blame me for anything you don't like in it. If you do like it, you can buy the DVD and they take Paypal, but they don't sell to the United States. Here's the forum, in English and Finnish. And some reader reviews. And here's the list of sponsors. You can read more about the film, including the story line, here. It begins:

Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning begins with Captain James B. Pirk of the starship Kickstart shipwrecked on the 21st century Earth with his crew.

Isn't that how you feel sometimes? Shipwrecked on 21st century Earth?

I can't recommend something I haven't yet seen, but the reader reviews look good (the *least* positive one said it was OK and he'd already viewed it twice), and the main thing is, I wanted to let you know that a movie under the Creative Commons license has been released by some dedicated creative guys from Finland, some of whom have been working on this film since 1992. And anyway, it's Saturday, a perfect day for a movie.

Why don't they ship to US?
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, October 01 2005 @ 09:20 AM EDT

Does anybody know why they don't ship to the USA? There's probably some reason (risk of lawsuits, maybe? or maybe it would create the necessity to file a US tax return?), but I'm curious as to what it is.

(Please don't post followups with conjectures - we can all make lots of conjectures. Post a followup if you know what the reason is. Or if you know why some similar outfit won't ship to the US. Thanks.)

Mistake in article...

It doesn't look like a Star _Wars_ parody, but rather a Star _Trek_ parody.
There's quite a difference. :)

It's a Total FragFest!

This movie is a hoot! I love how the Klingon's maniacal laughter translates as
"No mercy!" in the English subtitles. Yes, it is more of a Star Trek
parody than
Star Wars, although I gather the main story line is based on Star Wars. There
are also a lot of elements of Babylon 5 in the movie (my personal favorite --
who would've guessed due to my Groklaw ID?).

You don't have to order the DVD to enjoy the full-length movie. You can
download it for free from their website and then burn your own DVD. I
downloaded it using Bittorrent, but you can also download it the conventional
way.

"And so, it begins..."

No, it's Saturday, October 1 -- perfect time for a Linux gathering: The Ohio LinuxFest I'm currently at the LinuxFest, taking a break after lunch away from the activity to unwind a bit and breathe, and thought I'd drop a line to point this out. If you haven't heard of the Ohio LinuxFest, then check it out and prepare for next year. It's a free-to-attend event, sponsored by IBM, Novell, and several other big names in the industry. There will be a very nice party later on this evening, which I will attend after I get up to the corner of High St and Lane St for dinner, where one of the best Korean restaurants that I've ever eaten in can be found. Woot!

Torrents Rock!
Authored by: code_monkey on Saturday, October 01 2005 @ 02:09 PM EDT
TORRENT LINK HERE

I think supporting BitTorrent is at least as important as encouraging Open Licensing. What good is the right to copy, if you don't have the ability to copy, because peer-to-peer file sharing has been forced underground?

B T is the greatest thing to happen to content distribution since radio waves. Support it by using it.

This will probably go down well at my workplace...
Authored by: cybervegan on Saturday, October 01 2005 @ 02:36 PM EDT
...it's a Finnish company (hence lots of Finns) in North Wales.

I'm downloading it (via Torrent, like a good boy) and I'll probably take it in
to work on Monday, and hawk it round a bit...

A good way to tell people about CC licenses.

Regards,
-cybervegan

Software source code is a bit like underwear - you only want to show it off in
public if it's clean and tidy. Refusal could be due to embarrassment or shame...

Free to dub, no?
Authored by: fgoldstein on Saturday, October 01 2005 @ 04:32 PM EDT
Does the Creative Commons license mean that people can take the work and prepare
derivatives freely? The FAQ says that you "can spread the link, the movie
and the word as much as you like, as long as you don't change it, or charge
people for watching it." That would tend to discourage dubs, which rather
surprises me. I'm thinking about dubs, for instance. Sure, the purist only
wants to hear the original Suomi (Finnish), but a fair number of people might
prefer to hear it dubbed into their own dialect. Or some other dialect. (Hey,
it's supposed to be funny, so a Swedish Chef version might work.)

Amazing quality of production
Authored by: Freespirit on Monday, October 03 2005 @ 03:38 PM EDT
I just finished watching the entire move, and besides being hillarious, the
production quality is better than any independent movie I have ever seen! The
special effects are not in anyway 'cheasy' or cheap looking. Hope this is a sign
of things to come; high quality independent movies released under creative
commons lincenses.

-Freespirit (Still laughing....)
