"Best Blogger of the Year"
Monday, April 18 2005 @ 05:24 PM EDT

Awards This brought tears to my eyes, and I know you will want to read it too, because it's our accomplishment together. Dana Blankenhorn, who has been a business journalist for over 25 years, says ... I kept rewriting and rewriting... it seems a little odd to write about it myself, so I'll just let you read it in his words on Moore's Lore, which covers the history of technology:

The most important blogger of our time is probably Pamela Jones of Groklaw. Groklaw is more a community than a blog (but so is DailyKos). Despite the extensive help her audience gives her, Jones still gives her beat rigid attention, tons of supporting materials, and she gives her enemies plenty of rope for hanging themselves so that, when she does speak her mind, she has both authority and supporters. . . .

One more important point. Jones is, by her actions, Exhibit A for why bloggers are journalists. She acts as a journalist in all things, which is meant as a compliment, her ethics are impeccable, and her work ethic is astounding. She is, without doubt, one of the best reporters on law in the country, if not the best. She has earned far more praise than I have the power to bestow.

So congratulations and thanks.

No, truly, thank *you*. I appreciate deeply what you wrote. And your timing is impeccable.

: )

PJ,

You insist that groklaw is a community effort. In terms of intelligence
gathered for the head, that is true. You give this community heart. You
provide a common voice for something that we all love, and are willing to
defend. You may think your part is small, that anyone could have done it.
Maybe true, but you are the one who stepped up and did it. Never sell yourself
short.

Thank you, (from my heart to yours)

I can only say: Groklaw is my start and end of every day. I rarely leave
comments, but I feel I have to add something now.

I have learnt so much through reading Groklaw daily, and began to realise how
this case would turn out if you hadn't been covering it all, dragging all that
evidence in, getting so much others interested and involved, of which several
were running to courts to get documents to file, transcribe, etc. I believe you
made the difference to this case through your blog, and I'd just like to add my
appreciation to the list.

PJ: you have made all the good things about the net and the web come to reality.
I've been a net and web denizen for the better part of 18 years; and of all the
experiences I have had in cyberspace, this webspace is the one I'd come to
always, and, this is the web space I'd care to invite my loved ones to.

One of us has a sig that reads something about one does not know what new thing
one may find or learn on groklaw any given day. That is a sentiment I am sure
most of us feel—well, at least those among us that are addicted. I've learned so
many things just by being part of the audience. The brainshare here is a
treasure no doubt.

Your strength of conviction, your sense of seeking after the facts (as much as
is humanly possible), your sense of fair play, your sense of humour, your wit,
your power of perception, and I guess you being the PJ that we all have bonded
with, all contribute to making this blog/community/movement the best that there
is.

You built it and we came.

Thanks.

Congratulations PJ! You deserve it.

It is times like this that really makes you to smile and grin so wide that others may think you are a Cheshire Cat. :D

I have been reading Groklaw almost since it's birth. Probably missed first month or so tho. I have seen it transform couple times. Seen people come and go. But Groklaw never lost it's intergity. And that is because of you PJ. You have always kept it in right track.

You claim Groklaw is community effort and it is true. But there would not be Groklaw if you would not had started it. You gave birth to Groklaw. In essense Groklaw is your child PJ. Be proud of it. I sure am proud of it and you.

Thank you so much PJ. *bows*

"The most important blogger of our time is probably Pamela Jones of Groklaw"
Authored by: fLameDogg on Monday, April 18 2005 @ 07:02 PM EDT
The funny thing is that just the other day the thought crossed my mind that,
while I check out a blog from time to time, I don't really follow any. And yet
I read Groklaw nearly every day. But it just seems--different, somehow.
Certainly it's been the place to go for straight scoop and understanding since
the whole baffling SCO issue showed up.

What Groklaw does for "the community" is tremendously important. It
shines light where the shadows wish to play. I can't imagine how different
things would be without all the piercing scrutiny.

Groklaw is a shining example of how the open, collaborative model can
work--powerful, breathtaking, and fast. But just as Linus, while unable to do
it all himself, is essential for being the heart of the Linux kernel,
coordinating, motivating, and, yes, inspiring, so it is with you, PJ, and
Groklaw.

I am quite sure I would be far from alone in expressing my amazement at your
output, your attention to detail, and your ability to wade through the most (to
me) mind-numbing legal documents to pick out the dillies. But most important of
all, I believe, is your ethics. It is plain to see that you fully understand
*why* your firm stance on the truth is so important--certainly better than I do,
but what I'm getting at is that it's for the whole community's sake--really
everyone's sake.

Groklaw has such great value because, at the end of the day, it's about the
truth. It can be trusted. Sure, mistakes will happen from time to time, but
the intent is to find the truth. It makes me proud. Not so much as a
participant--I am barely a wart on Groklaw's nose (assuming it had any)--but
just merely to witness it.

A very well deserved distinction that many columnists, and authors of trends and business "studies" could never dream of.
As long as journalists like Mr. Blankenhorn recognize the quality of your work, some other people who attack you seem even smaller.
Pamela Jones. You are setting the high quality standard by which true journalism will soon be measured.

Definately rings true
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, April 18 2005 @ 07:09 PM EDT
I first realized the potential of groklaw after clicking about the third /. link
regarding the SCO/IBM case and decided to check the site out.

It's this kind of journalism that was lacking during the OJ trial, where all you
could find was the 24/7 feeds of *shudder* CNN where they were overanalyzing
just about every aspect and completely missing the point it seemed on the most
part.

None of my questions were being answered. It was attourneys talking about law in
lawspeak without even really paying attention to their watcherbase, offering
very little usefulness outside of the actual trial footage itself.

Groklaw, by comparison, pays attention to the readership. Articles are posted in
both legalese and human english, complete with predictions of what this will
mean in the long run and keeping pretty much the whole case in context.

I don't visit groklaw so much these days (mainly because my home comp got stolen
and the main way in which I kept current was by having it in my bookmarks), but
I still pop in and have just as much clarity in what's going on in the cases
covered as was given at the beginning of my GL reading.

Keep up the good work, Pam. You deserve every inch of this award.

all in the community that use this as a source of knowledge, understanding and
ranting ground. Please if you have a few spare quid, send some PJ's way. Not
for the awards, not for the possible red dress, but for the simple fact she

Well earned praise for someone well deserving of it. Had this been a

other news awards sewn up. I keep wondering where the coverage is in those media
news outlets, but they're too busy covering an earthquake which knocked over a

First of all, congratulations for PJ, and everyone who participate here. (minus
trolls perhaps, ha!)

I think that sticking to the known and documented facts, being inspired by a
deep sense of ethic behaviour used to be what journalism used to stand for.

Unfortunately, this is not totally true nowadays, especially in mainstream
media.
Especially if journalists depend on company money to survive, it's never been
easy to be cool with both God and evil. (be it Wall Street, trade unions,
political party, or any other organization that can buy your opinion and
reputation)

What I see is people flocking en masse to bloggers, because journalism (the old
kind) is no longer able to develop its function the way it's supposed to be.

It doesn't seem too strange to think it's soon to be the day where journalists
are the praised ones when they achieve the ethic standards only certain bloggers
can afford to have.

cheers !

But it's much too strong
To let it go now

We meet every day at the same blog
One-thirty AM and you know she'll be there
Writing and making all kinds of logs
While the keyboard hums along

We gotta be extra careful
That do we don't build our hopes up too high
Because she's got her own obligations
And so, and so, do I

Well, it's time for us to be leaving
It hurts so much, it hurts so much inside
Now she'll go her way and I'll go mine
Tomorrow we'll meet

At the risk of sounding like an echo of what so many others have already said, I
believe every single word of praise, from Dana and others, has been well
deserved by you, PJ.

While not being terribly knowledgable myself, I appreciate the contributions of
each and every Groklaw member who's made this site what it is. Thank you one and
all for showing that there are still people who won't just accept "that's
the way it is" when it comes to the profit motive overtaking the benefit of
the average computer-using Joe. I'm in awe of the depth of knowledge and ability
collected here.

And in amongst all of this, PJ, you've shown a leadership and an integrity
that's been an inspiration to so many, the world over (incidentally, I'm another
Australian). It's true that there's thousands of people fighting for F/OSS
(hundreds of thousands, even), but having a banner to rally to will always
consolidate the strength of our numbers.

Kudos to PJ, and to all the Groklaw contributors who've helped gather documents
and transcribe interviews. We're making a difference. :D

Congrats PJ.

You deserve this award, primarally because Groklaw is about what journalism
*used to be* all about.

Reporting the facts with intelligence, insight, integrity, and honesty.

It's sad that most of the "mainstream" press has forgotten all about
journalism, and appear to many to be nothing more than paid shills... and rather
unskilled paid shills at that.

Keep up the good work, and keep serving as an example of what journalism should
be all about.

spin things their way and no one ever seems to notice or cry "Foul!"
That makes me think that there is something terribly wrong with this world.

Then I visit Groklaw and I see that those bad guys aren't really getting away
with anything. Their FUD is exposed honestly for all to see. This makes me
realize that the world is ok after all.

P.J. you deserve every good word that has been said here. You built your great
reputation the old-fashioned way - you earned it.

Hip-Hip-Hooray for P.J.!

Congratulations, PJ! Well deserved praise, indeed. Calling Groklaw a blog,
though, almost condemns it with faint praise, tainting it by association with
most of the dreck in the blogosphere. Groklaw is almost purely investigative
journalism, and it's all the more unusual for having such a high degree of
focus. Is Groklaw biased? Sure, but not only is PJ's reporting complete, the
best investigative jounalists always have a take on the stories they report. In
an age where most so-called journalists are content to photocopy press releases,
Groklaw is a true gem.

Hi, PJ.

You have given us a wonderful gift through Groklaw, one nobody could ever place
a value on. You have given us a place where we can learn a lot not just on how
laws apply to the issues surrounding SCO v. the Universe, but how they can apply
just about anywhere, in just about any context.

Not only that, you have given all of us--legal eagles and techies alike--a
sounding board to collimate all of our voices--while each may be quiet on its
own--into a seismically-deafening roar that can shake even the sturdiest
building built on lies and bad faith to its very foundation.

As a Linux user for nearly 13 years, I'd like to extend a heartfelt thanks.

The article names PJ as the most important Blogger of the year, however I don't
think that really goes far enough..

While it is impossible to say what would have happened in the SCO vs. IBM case
had PJ not entered the fray via Groklaw, (that being totally in the hands of the
courts), it is easy to see what would have happened in the propaganda war
against FOSS and Linux. SCO would have been uncontested in the media and their
lies would have eventually been accepted by the masses as truth.

And so, I would like to suggest that Ms. Jones impact and importance will go on
well beyond just the current year, and my grandchildren may well read about PJ
as being one of those people most directly responsible for keeping the Internet
free and open for the future.

And on a more personal level, she is probably the person most directly
responsible for the drop in productivity at my office desk, since I rarely get
through the day without logging on the Groklaw at least once to catch up with
the news.

I appreciate the fact that you lay out your opinions clearly, back them up with
clear enunciations of the facts as you know them - and give us room to disagree
with you, as I have done on occasion.

SCOG may disagree (in fact, they do) with my assessment but they don't seem to
have any understanding that when they are on groklaw, they have to abide by
groklaw's editorial rules. They have no respect for others' IP (and in fact, for
anyone) and it would be an illogical stretch to expect them to respect others'
editorial rules. As for the attitude of the trolls community, they seem to
believe that their right to disagree entitles them to immunity from groklaw's
editorial rules.

I am grateful that you have created groklaw as a framework where you contribute
your not inconsiderable expertise in research that can stand up in court while
the members of the groklaw community contribute their own not inconsiderable
technical, legal, financial and business expertise as well as the plain good
sense that we would expect from a jury. In his latest tirade, Darl the Snarl is
apparently giving groklaw full credit for cutting off the air supply and
derailing of SCOG's PR campaign and extortion plan. If SCOG is true to form,
then we are not about to hear the last of SCOG's lies and misrepresentations
although for some reason, they have almost expunged the trash talk except in
their court filings - three successive motions for summary judgment will do that
to you.

PJ, she has articulated the thoughts of most of the regulars here - a blog is a
blog is a blog (apologies for paraphrasing ;-) but integrity is exceptionally
hard to find these days.

So, to cut a long reply short, I for one simply agree with every word she wrote.
So sue me <evil grin>.

Once again tSCOg and supporters miscalculate ...
Authored by: dmarker on Tuesday, April 19 2005 @ 02:30 AM EDT
From reading the typical reactions in this thread & spotting the occasional
dark troll (particularly the anon poster who made an attempt to put words onto
PJ that she never said in regard to avoiding 'attack' from tSCOg), Groklaw &
PJ just get stronger.

What we see now is a trend whereby each time that tSCOg & hangers on, make
attacks on PJ & Groklaw, it appears to spawn a further swelling of support
and admiration for PJ and Groklaw and a corresponding increase in the odium and
contempt that is heaped on tSCOg and those journalists known for their
orchestrated supporting attacks on Groklaw.

I am no longer sure that MOG does her blurbs just to razz us up so as to
increase her hit count at LBW. I do believe she pumps out the blurbs on cue from
Yarro/McBride and just in time to pay her rent (one can only guess as to how
else she pays it).

I think the evidence before us is that the pro sco factions are dwindling in
numbers and in impact. They are so easy to spot and swat that they seem to be
giving up compared to the numbers that would once have appeared here. All we
need next is for those sychophantic journalists known for pumping tSCOg's hollow
blustering to move on to themes they can pursue so as to rebuild some modicum of
respect. It may actually be possible for at least one of them allowing that two
of that crew are well past their 'use by' dates.

Lets hope too, that IBM gets some relief soon by way of blunt action from the
courts.

Darllum and that "tricksy" PJ
Authored by: belzecue on Tuesday, April 19 2005 @ 04:11 AM EDT
Frodo... PJ... Frodo... PJ... Frodo...

Nah, PJ is the *real* hero, no question. :-)

Mind you, I didn't like that Darllum character at all, no sir. That business at
the teleconference about "tricksy PJ wants to take away my
preeeeecious"... come on, nobody acts like that in real life, right? I
mean, nobody is *that* evil in real life, right?

Anyway, I hear that the guy who played Darllum is making a guest appearance at
SCOForum 2005. He'll be talking about how the studio used Linux to render his
character, and how Windows Server 2003 was used to provide the AI.

Aren't you the least bit worried that you are being praised by someone who
either doesn't read Groklaw, or is too dim to understand what the hearing on
21st March 2005 is about?

Either way, it's not exactly a shining endorsement for Groklaw's ability to
educate casual readers. As a drop-in reader, I find it very frustrating that
most articles assume that I've been following every twist and turn of this thing
from the start. It's not a soap opera.

Certainly much more will time tell about the true impact of your work. Along
with the FOSS community you are contributing to a shift in the way we
understand economics and community. In regards to journalism your work has
allowed us to become participants in the process of finding truth. No longer
must we be dependent on the networks, as we are no longer dependent on MS
exclusively. Now, how can we persuade the Whitehouse to make room for those
other than CNN, CBS, etc?

Let me quote from my farewell to read-only access to
Groklaw a year ago (a PMail to PJ which got honoured by
her with a personal reply). It seems to fit now even
better than then:

another one leaving lurkdom...

First, the familiar ;-) big thank-you for bringing Groklaw
to life.

I won't even begin to try to describe the amount of
encouragement Groklaw must be continuing to provide to
lots and lots of honest Linuxers all around the globe. For
me it certainly does, and I deeply appreciate it (I've got
to work with Linux by profession).

Again, thank you for Groklaw: in particular, those
countless clear, understandable explanations of legal
speech, processes and logic.

Keep up the good work!

I wanted to know more. Now I know where to look.
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, April 20 2005 @ 10:46 AM EDT
The benefit, to my view, goes above and beyond just the SCO case, and the FOSS
community. As a run of the mill internet geek, I know little to nothing about
law, had never heard of Pacer, and wouldn't even know how to follow a case if I
wanted to, short of hiring a lawyer and asking what would surely amount to a
frustrating barrage of stupid questions.

When the SCO case first became news, I cringed inwardly, and not just because
something that mattered to me was being threatened, but at the thought that
there was going to be another long, protracted multiyear legal battle that'd
leave all of the plebes like me hanging 'til it was resolved years later, with
nothing more for a denouement than a vague, unsatisfying press release from the
two parties in question. Having fidgeted while the BSD/AT&T case fermented
quietly in the background, I was bracing for a repeat.

I had no concept of what happens in a legal battle, outside of what I saw on
television, not even a vague concept of how these things can drag on for years.

Now I do. Now I've got a much better idea of what goes on between the initial
"I'll sue! So help me, I'll sue!" and the tight-lipped, "It's
settled." at the end, and I can follow a case that genuinely interests me
from the comfort of my own web browser, and read it in plain English, besides.

Thank you, PJ. Thank you. Thank you.
