> Apple's iOS and iPAD, being first ...
That is a myth. It may be the first that most people ever heard of, but there
were Windows tablets for a decade before the iPad came out.
The problem for those was that Windows and most of the desktop software is
unsuitable for using touch. Most of the software requires fine usage of a mouse
pointer, the click areas are too small. When run on a 10inch monitor it is too
difficult to use. Also the input areas do not move out of the way of the
on-screen keyboard so it is awkward to enter data even if the on-screen keyboard
was usable.
The main failure of Surface is that it requires a keyboard and yet does not
convert into a laptop. The keyboard connection is floppy and the result of
attaching it gives poor weight distribution and inconvenient angles making it
require a 'surface' such as a desktop. It can't even be used on an airliner
tray.

For a long time now, I thought that the best and
smartest way for MS to greatly improve their OS,
would be to use BSD as a base to build upon.
By using a variation on WINE they could even permit
continued use of many legacy applications, while
permitting the development of newer better saner
applications using the better OS interfaces
that BSD provides.
When you start with a poor quality foundation,
it is hard to build anything really good atop it.
Even if it manages to look good, it is only skin
deep and with a little bit of stress, the flaws
may appear. Practically everything MS has is
built upon a poor quality foundation.
But MS is too proud and arrogant to ever consider
doing something that might make sense, if it
involved giving the slightest hint that others
have done much better jobs developing operating
systems and software in general than MS ever has.
Each mistake that MS makes pleases me, because it
brings closer that time when MS might be nothing
more than a bad memory. I think Ballmer is doing
a fine job of destroying the company. But Ballmer
might take some pointers from Elop, as I think
that Elop is without peer in terms of destroying
the value of a company quickly. Just look at
what Elop has done with Nokia.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
