David Cameron says that he will stop Google and other search engines providing
results on outrageously lewd search terms.
The stated aims of the government net nannies are to stop children inadvertently
seeing grossly unsuitable net content. The main advocates want everyone using
the net to opt in to unfiltered access.
I agree that parents should be allowed to opt in to having web material filtered
for their children and, if that is what they want, for themselves. There is
appalling stuff on the web that I would not want to see.
The unacceptable search terms are not input by innocent children. Any government
inspired controls might lead to disgusting search terms like 'Groklaw' and
'Snowden' being proscribed by the Prime Minister. Opting in for my daily Groklaw
fix would be a red flag to GCHQ (think, NSA) warning them to monitor my every
surf and comment.
If you think government regulation of search results would be a bad thing, just
think about regulation of search terms.
