Microsoft getting its comeuppance
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, July 18 2013 @ 11:46 PM EDT
Todays flyers from Future Shop and Best Buy have them listed at $349. Still
$100+ more than the Nexus, Playbook or HP Slate with less functionality.

Maybe if they bundled them with the Lumia and a full copy of windows 8, they
could pay people $20 to take them and save of disposal costs.

MS playing tax games?
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, July 19 2013 @ 05:32 AM EDT
What advantage could MS derive from having a loss at this time?

Assume they planned this to happen, how do they benefit?

Not even good scrap value.

These machines can't even be retargeted.

Not good for the scrap heap with all the hazmat contents either.

Writedowns
Authored by: albert on Friday, July 19 2013 @ 04:00 PM EDT
"Reducing the book value of an asset because it is overvalued compared to
the market value. A write-down typically occurs on a company's financial
statement, when the carrying value of the asset can no longer be justified as
fair value and the likelihood of receiving the cost (book value) is questionable
at best."-----"Write-downs are typically reflected in a company's
income statement as an above-the-line expense, thereby reducing net income.
This, however, is not always a bad thing, since a write-down is simply a paper
loss, which, since it lowers net income, will reduce a firm's tax burden.
Companies will usually attempt to time large write-downs together, so they can
"take a bath" in one reporting period with the hope of quickly
recovering in the next period." - Investopedia

Most big corp accountants know what they're doing, unlike the management. :)

Surface RT
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, July 19 2013 @ 07:43 PM EDT
The black hole is the Surface RT, the failure to find buyers for
x86 software running on ARM. But how's Surface Pro doing?
A serious question because I'm getting glossy flyers falling
out of my morning paper "Finally a tablet with work ethic",
for HP ElitePad & W8Pro.

The graphics are amusing, executives hunched over toy keyboards,
or displaying the device to a colleague like they'd never watched ST.

A lot of analysts have been predicting problems with Surface
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, July 22 2013 @ 09:45 AM EDT

Not the Mainstream Media of course, but Charlie Demerjian at
SemiAccurate has covered this, and so did I. So it really isn't that big a
surprise.

Well, the write-down amount is. I knew it wasn't likely to sell well when they
announced the original price. There's a big difference from "not selling
well"
to total disaster, which is what the numbers here imply.
