I noticed the same thing, and wondered why.
Maybe (someone at) Google really was manipulating the search?
Maybe Google stopped responding to location searches with Google Maps as a
defensive measure, and Streetmap was always the top 'other' map?
Maybe the brief but intense burst of publicity around Streetmap's accusations
increased the number of references to Streetmap on the web, so that Google's
pigeons put Streetmap back at the top of the list?
I don't know what really happened, but I remain unconvinced about the first
explanation.

I found two working bookmarks that I had saved in Opera many years ago (I go
direct to GoogleMaps myself because it works better for me). I do not blame
Google for returning excellent GoogleMaps links in their general search results.
Obviously, their search result algorithm has found many more people clicking on
GoogleMaps links than any other map service site.
Everyone has a choice. If you want Multimaps then bookmark
http://www.bing.com/maps/. If you want Streetmap UK then bookmark
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/. If you want Streetfinder then bookmark
http://www.streetfinder.co.uk/ (be warned, the adverts seem to be the same as
for Streetmap UK and it may just be a branding distinction. These bookmarks work
well in Chromium and Internet Explorer (allegedly - I am an Opera fan).
One of the drawbacks I find with Streetmap UK is that every page seems dominated
by adverts for private health insurance, satnavs, auto recovery services,
insurance and so on. Also, on the map page it has a Yahoo Search box as a part
of the service and that, of course, is Bing.
Another reason that I don't use it any more is that they used to announce that
the Streetmap search engine itself was Bing. I decided that, if the map search
was anywhere near as bad as other searches using Bing, that I did not want to
use it.
I noticed that the map page had a 'Click here to toggle map adverts' that did
not seem to work. Perhaps they could not get anyone to sponsor adverts in my
area. It might be the Bing effect.
I suspect that they are just another Microsoft partner rather than a completely
independent map service.
