Notice of security breach on Ubuntu Forums site
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, July 22 2013 @ 04:15 AM EDT
List of people who are potentially thinking about:

freedom to think.
security.
personal ability to make a difference in the world.
privacy.

The important thing is who got the information:

If it's someone who gives/sells info the the USA I wouldn't be warning people to
change their passwords, I'd be warning them to start taking their physical
security *very* seriously. The USA is getting feisty.

Ubuntu is billed as the "easy" Linux distro, where people go when
they're just starting to think about stepping outside the box. Who wants to
know that? I wouldn't be suprised if Microsoft was responsible, and is looking
for companies to bully out of using Linux.

If it's just some small-time group looking to make a little money then changing
your passwords is a good step. But that's the best-case scenario. It could be
a lot worse.

ID theft

Don't forget, a lot of people reuse passwords. If you can crack the ones
from the Ubuntu site (or the Drupal site - where this also happened
recently), then you can try the passwords obtained on other sites where the
user has an account.

I suspect it was scammers, and that they may have gotten password
hashes from some other sites, and that they intend to combine the two sets
of hashes to make breaking simpler.

Maybe there is no reason at all. Who can tell what ever crazy person out there
is thinking?

Don't think so. Perhaps for the same reason some people climb mountains or scale
buildings. It was possible and it was there.
