I don't imagine it 's proprietary competitors can be very happy about OpenStreetMap.

I find the layout both easier to understand with just a quick glance and faster to navigate.

A lot of people must be working very hard on this as it is getting more detailed all the time.

If you want Streetmap UK, then just bookmark it

The problem with your solution is that, by my bookmarking streetmap (and like
the GP, I much prefer streetmap to Google Maps), is that it means EVEN FEWER
people are clicking through on streetmap links, and it is even less likely to
come up high in a Google search!

I don't know what the solution is, but it certainly is NOT "bookmark your
favourite alternatives". That approach will make those sites even less
visible to the search engines, and could easily kill them off ...

Law of unintended consequence?
