You've found the secret

if all you have to do is click a couple buttons to get root,
there will be exponentially more noobs with bricked phones
looking for help on the internet. If, however, it takes a
little bit of experience and know-how to root your phone,
the people that will ultimately ruin their device will be
just scared enough to stay away from it - as they should be
- while the rest of us that know what we are doing, can do
as we want.

Now, this raises another question, though - why can't
techno-phobes have a rooted phone? there isn't an easy
answer. i would suggest a service that roots phones, but i'm
sure there are legal aspects preventing that.

Apache vs BSD vs GPL
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, July 22 2013 @ 09:33 AM EDT

And that is why I choose GPL licensed code.

Because with Apache/BSD - any ol' proprietary vendor can lock down the software and not provide you any of the modifications.

I still have positive hopes for Motorola to produce a totally open phone so one can remove/install all the apps one wants.

The ironic thing is:

The moment Motorola does that, it'll be much, much harder for Google's competitors to say Google is responsible for all the other locked-down-can't-change-defaults phones.
