I like maps, and have done so from a very early age, because my father had a few
Ordnance Survey maps of some of the more spectacular parts of Scotland, so this
topic is very interesting to me. I don't know how many volunteers are feeding
data into OpenStreetmap, but it must be a very large number, and they are very
good. A couple of years ago it matured rapidly, and now I prefer it if I just
want a plain map. If I want to see contour lines and all sorts of other
geographic stuff, I still want an OS map, available from streetmap.co.uk in
small pieces. It may look better, but can never be as up to date as
OpenStreetmap, because volunteers can apply updates as soon as they see the
changes, while proprietary maps are updated only every few years. I use
OSMand+ on my Android tablet, and have large parts of Europe and Australia on
it, to avoid the need to have a live internet connection. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
