True criminals?
Authored by: cricketjeff on Wednesday, July 03 2013 @ 10:15 AM EDT
I think (as a long time Sys Admin and under the jargon "data
controller" for a number of websites who has had to go through all
varieties of bumpf and training on the subject) that AT&T would be at the
least very unwise to assume that email addresses are OK to release en masse.

From the website of the ICO

"In the context of the Internet, many e-mail addresses are personal data
where the e-mail address clearly identifies a particular individual. The
Commissioner is Elizabeth France. The e-mail address
elizabethfrance@dataprotection.gov.uk is thus personal data about the
Commissioner."

It is thus clear that unless AT&T had gone through the list and removed any
addresses that gave this sort of additional information releasing it in bulk
would constitute a prima facie case of a breach of the rules.
