The Bing challenge: with iOS 7 and Windows 8.1, search could be Microsoft's new platform
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, July 02 2013 @ 03:26 PM EDT
Who else are they going to work with? Yahoo gave up on their
own search years ago. Right now, there are only two big names
in search: Bing and Google. You can't honestly think that
Apple would partner with Google for *anything*, can you?

In their dreams. Aren't all search engines web-based?
So... the search engine will be local.... on the local computer. It can't be "cloud" because that's still web based after all. So it has to be local.

But if search is local - then you need to have all the available data present that's out there on the Web.

And that would mean you need some rather impressive storage area compared with the current personal computing needs.

That puts a demand on the hard drive manufacturers...

And of course... they'll have to make sure that storage is small enough....

So we can expect to have drives that can store a petabyte, exabyte or maybe even a zettabyte (although brontobyte sounds cooler) on our desktops soon!

So that's how MS is going to bring back the importance of the desktop!

Nah.... MS can't possibly do something useful - it'll just be dumb luck (and a lot of perseverance from those MS anti-competitively targets) they factored in at all.

Personally, I find Bing challenging in any context...

So, Apple is all in, for a search platform that's embedded in the OS, that
delivers awful results and ties them to Microsoft. So much for Apple
coolness...

On the plus side, apparently (per the article) its very good for finding
celebrity news, so if you need your 24/7 Justin Beiber fix, Bing has you
covered.
