So bail us out, by telling the foreign company that they
can't block us from selling devices in our country. Even if
we won't pay them for their efforts, we should win--because
we're an American company.

Which is perfectly in line with other big companies.
It sure is: the big companies just make a cross-licensing deal.

The difference here is that Apple does not want a cross-licensing deal. They don't want to pay anybody, but they still want to get paid for patents that are technologically weak sauce to the degree of being actually non-patentable, but which fuzzily cover large segments of the market.

Basically, Apple asks to be nominally treated like a patent troll, a non-productive entity that only receives royalties but does not have to pay them.

I'd wish for consumers to accept that stance and treat Apple like a non-productive entity and not buy their products.
