For those of you who wonder how a spiral feeder works, the vibrations are not
just random shaking, and it's not just an up and down motion. Either of those
would make the stuff move down the spiral, not up. The impulses in a spiral
feeder have a rotational component and an up-down component, synchronized to
throw the goods ever so slightly up the slope with every vibration. The up-down
motion is small but quick, because it needs to have an downward acceleration
larger than 1G at its upper apex to make the stuff airborne for short periods of
time.

As a side note, Lego bricks are packed into their boxes using that kind of
feeders. Except for the rubber tires, which are packed by hand. Soft, bouncy
stuff does not behave well in spiral feeders.
