Scotus has struck down the voting rights
act, more or less. They punted to
congress. What is the
outcome of them refusing the voting rights act like
this? I
heard unhappy comments all over the place, and I'm not sure I
understand the ruling's impact. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

This is in response to PJ's news pick comment about buying a Chromebook
I bought an Acer Chromebook for my son for school work.
In general I really like it, with one exception: No policy editor.
If you get a Chromebook for education or business, you gain access to the web
based Admin Console that lets you set up policies like white and black lists for
the internet.
If you get a Chromebook for personal use, you do not get access to this admin
console, and are not able to set policy without gaining root access to your
Chromebook. Beyond that the policy set available via the admin console is much
broader than that available from the local console.
I would be willing to pay for access to the web based admin console, but this is
simply not an option for personal use. As a work around, I've installed
FoxFilter, which has a web based policy editor for that plug in only. It works
fairly well, though it's policy options are fairly limited (lacking user
profiles, for instance).

Hans[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

When one is

perhaps a closer examination is in

As in, a closer exam of the brains of those
saying
that Google
should be regulated like a telco.
They may have it backwards. See

Over the past several months, I've filed for
contracts between Booz
Allen Hamilton and over 75 federal
agencies and departments. Eleven have
completed those
requests, releasing thousands of pages detailing how an
increasing amount of America's governmental operations are
being outsourced to
private contractors.
Want to help keep our government accountable? Help read
through the responsive documents, and flag material that is
worth a closer
look. So far, we have documents from the

My trusty Acer aspire 7520 has been running very slow, with the fan often at
full speed, for a while, almost as if it was running is supplied OS, Vista,
instead of something far more efficient. Finally had a look, and it takes all
of 2 minutes on this amazingly well-built machine to unscrew and prise out the
RAM and CPU cover, and another minute to unscrew the fan from the base. There
was a thick matted layer of dust, hair etc, like a piece of felt, between fan
outlet and the fins of the heatpipe radiator, hence hardly any cooling and the
CPU speed being throttled on heavy computational load to avoid overheating. A
minute with the vacuum cleaner, and two more to screw it all back together
again, and it booted up in record time, and the fan is barely turning over right
now. Note to self: Check cooling of all computers at least every 6 months. I
wonder how many others are having such easily fixed performance problems? This
machine is fairly old now, but with a new lease of life I will be keeping it,
and likely swapping one of my previous upgrades, a second internal hard drive,
with a SDD. Frankly, with a well-built machine like this, almost anyone could
fix the cooling problem, which is more than can be said of a more recent HP,
where access is a nightmare. Such is progress.... [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The European data protection activists behind the Europe v Facebook (evf)
campaign group, that has long been a thorn in Facebook’s side in Europe, have
filed new complaints under regional data protection law targeting Facebook,
Apple, Microsoft, Skype and Yahoo for their alleged collaboration with the NSA’s
Prism data collection program.
TechCrunch article
Europe v. Facebook press release:
If a European subsidiary
sends user data to the American parent company, this is considered an “export”
of personal data. Under EU law, an export of data is only allowed if the
European subsidiary can ensure an “adequate level or protection” in the foreign
country. After the recent disclosures on the “PRISM” program such trust in an
“adequate level of protection” by the involved companies can hardly be
upheld.
There can in no way be an adequate level of protection if
they cooperate with the NSA on the other end of the line. Right now an export of
data to the US must be seen as illegal if the involved companies cannot disprove
the reports on the PRISM program. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

wow, what a hard hitting week for the courts! SCOTUS has struck down the
Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
This one should be
especially interesting going forward as this nullifies prop

in California altogether. Fark humorously worded it as
"everyone now has a
right to lose half their stuff". [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Major mobile network operator Telefónica is partnering with
Microsoft to double-down on Windows Phone 8 and launch an ‘enhanced marketing
effort’ to boost handset sales running the mobile operating system.
Telefónica confirmed it would step up its advertising in the United Kingdom,
Germany, Spain, Mexico, Brazil and Chile over the coming year, to end what it
describes as “the current duopoly” of Android and iOS.
Doesn't Telefónica know that those so called "MS partners" usually go
downhill?
And frankly, seeing the Nokia/WP sinking shouldn't raise a red
flag?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Another article about how Western music undermines totalitarian regimes. We've
had the Beatles liberating the Soviet Union. Now it may be that Springsteen gave
a significant push on the Berlin wall with his East Berlin concert in '88. A fun

Roberts has been awfully centrist lately. Liberal on DOMA and Obamacare and
conservative on the Voting Rights Act. After the 2012 Republican freak show,
would a chief justice be a reassuring presence in the Republican Party?
So, the chief justice is your opponent. What do YOU bring to the table? Senator?
Governor? Secretary of state?

The Associated Press and several other
large media outlets initially reported that the bill had passed, taking Lt. Gov.
Dewhurst's word that the vote was taken "just before" 12 AM.
But Democratic
State Senators and the tens of thousands who witnessed the vote live on a
YouTube stream were skeptical.
As well they should have
been.
Screengrabs of the official SB5 results page captured by several wonks
clearly show the record vote was called after midnight local time, and was
therefore dated 6/26.
A truly historic effort to prevent
corrupt politicians
from railroading their agenda.

The old UnXis.com has rebranded itself XINUOS and has a live website.
The most
interesting feature of the rebrand is the job posting for
a BSD engineer , to integrate a BSD userland on-top of the hoary SCO
OS.
The posting states (in part):
Familiarity with Microsoft Operating
System.
Ability to manage a proprietary, closed OS product based on
FreeBSD
Previous experience discussing technical details of OS features with
Development Managers
Ideas for enhancements to FreeBSD that would provide
Xinuos with a competitive advantage.
Familiarity with policies and
procedures of The Open Group, and UNIX branding.
Demonstrated ability to get
access to Product Managers at leading software application vendors
A degree
in Engineering or Computer Science.
Acquaintances on the FreeBSD Foundation
BOD or with community contributors.
Familiarity with SCO OS products and
UNIX
