SCOTUS strikes down voting rights act
Authored by: YurtGuppy on Tuesday, June 25 2013 @ 04:28 PM EDT

The pre-implementation review part is what is gone (for now).

Texas is now as liable to be sued as Arizona
or any other state.

No, the voting rights act has not been struck down.

SCOTUS strikes down voting rights act

Actually if what I read is true, it's HOW to determine whether
states need special oversight, not that oversight isn't still
potentially needed. They are using fifty year old
calculations and methods.

To make an analogy it's like a collision of old copyright law
with modern technology and fair use.

For someone who respects lawyers and judges, that seems like a very
unenlightened statement.

We have 9 justices, they cover a wide range of current thinking. They were
appointed by presidents from both parties.

A photo id is not a bad idea.
Authored by: Kilz on Wednesday, June 26 2013 @ 03:18 AM EDT
I am an election judge in Illinois, and a democrat. I worked
during early voting and a id is required then. But it is not
required on election day, but it should.
I can not see how this stops people voting. A photo id is
almost required to function in our society. A 5 year state id
can be had for $20 and its free to seniors and disabled
people. You need to show an id to cash a check. To open a
bank account, to get a loan, and lots of other things.
But you dont need to prove who you are and your address to
vote? Thats just doesnt make sense.
