Well, is it Linux?

Well, what else could it be? I don't think there is any other OS, with the credibility for the job, that is as well understood. The hardware, including the CPU architecture, has not been defined yet, but will be either fully documented processor boards or our own design, so we need something that has been ported to any likely architecture, which rules out OpenBSD, even though its code quality is probably the best. SCOundrelware is out, for obvious reasons.

NetBSD would also have been a candidate, but the software team are not familiar with it.

Although the required product life is only about 15 years, there is strong disinclination to use anything proprietary which can not be replicated or replaced if it becomes obsolete, so things like PC motherboards are non-starters.

There is also a SUN running Slowlaris, which we have not been asked to replace, however that can most likely be replaced by a new Sun should the need arise.
