Could only happen in the US?
Authored by: Ian Al on Sunday, June 23 2013 @ 04:05 AM EDT
I was heartened by the news from the German courts, but there is still the
Fraunhofer Institute patents on the math algorithms used to play .mp3 files and
many other instances of math being patented (e.g. the Dolby sound algorithms).

Also, there are notable signatories to the failed patent accord that ended up
with the creation of the European Patent Office. Although patents controlling
software are not within the scope of the UK patent office, the English and Welsh
courts still accept EPO software patents as valid (AFAIK).

This is despite the European Parliament rejecting moves to put software patents
into European law.

The world, in general, shares the US need to reject patents on laws of nature,
math and abstract ideas. Nationally, they hold to the principles, but the patent
offices do not. I suspect that the root cause of the problem was, in part, the
pressure put upon the rest of the world by the USA.

Also, the world seems to share America's blind spot on the facts of how software
and computers work. This is particularly outrageous in the birthplace of Alan
Turing.

Software Patents: It's the disclosed functions in the patent, stupid!
