The purpose of the patent system...
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, June 14 2013 @ 04:51 PM EDT
As a university professor, I thank you for your support of gov't funded
research. As an aside, I personally haven't patented any of my discoveries and
have no plans to.

But I think it's important that people realize a trade-off is going have to be
made. We've basically got 3 options, as I see it:

1. We promote increases in the budget of the National Institutes of Health to
fund more University Research
2. We create incentives for for-profit entities (like biotechs) to undertake
this type of research, with the understanding that they will expect to recoup
their R&D costs (similar to the pharmaceutical model)
3. We don't create incentives for biotechs OR fund the NIH to a great extend and
live with slower discovery of associations between genes and disease (or don't
live as long bc of the slow pace, more accurately).

Don't get me wrong, I think myriad genetics overreached trying to patent a human
gene. But if the association between a gene and a disease isn't protected in any
way, there will be no incentives for for-profit entities to undertake that type
of research.
