NSA folks scratching their heads
Authored by: PJ on Thursday, June 13 2013 @ 09:35 PM EDT
Or maybe the policy of using outside contractors
isn't the wisest policy? Maybe Booz Allen isn't
as careful as the NSA? Or maybe he's better
at computers than they are? Maybe he's leaking
the materials but others are giving him things?
Maybe it's all a set up to make the President
look bad? Many possibilities.

You would assume that the NSA is using SELinux, the secure
version of Linux that they modified and configured. But
then, assumptions are not always correct.

On a normal computer system, root (or administrator or
SYSOPER.SYS or whatever) has access to everything that is
physically or logically attached to the system.

But SELinux can partition files so that even root can't look
at them without permission.

Of course, backup tapes and removable storage (and email)
are probably the Achilles heel of any security plan.

If SELinux, then how did he get access? If not SELinux, then
how could he NOT get access.

it would not surprise me in the least if snowden is the fall
guy of a bigger plot. Seeing as how he has not come out with a
conspiracy theory defense, it would also not surprise me if he
is being compensated for the loss of his ~$130K salary just to
stay quiet...

IANAL

It was caught up in the communication data collecting that was being reviewed by
Snowden...
