Using Metadata to Find Paul Revere
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, June 11 2013 @ 11:23 AM EDT
I have been asked by my superiors to give a brief demonstration of the surprising effectiveness of even the simplest techniques of the new-fangled Social Networke Analysis in the pursuit of those who would seek to undermine the liberty enjoyed by His Majesty’s subjects.

This is in connection with the discussion of the role of “metadata” in certain recent events and the assurances of various respectable parties that the government was merely “sifting through this so-called metadata” and that the “information acquired does not include the content of any communications”. I will show how we can use this “metadata” to find key persons involved in terrorist groups operating within the Colonies at the present time.

I shall also endeavour to show how these methods work in what might be called a relational manner.

Xinuos is the new brand of SCO. The former UnXis has been legally renamed (and
apparently reorganized with Sean P. Snyder incharge), and the website is now
redirecting as well.

escaping from a mobile theme ...
Authored by: nsomos on Tuesday, June 11 2013 @ 12:40 PM EDT
Some may have experimented with a mobile theme for Groklaw,
and then had some trouble switching back, or to anything else.

Escaping the mobile theme really isn't hard once you know how.

Near the top of the 'home' page is a 'user blocks' link.
Follow that link. Once there pick 'Preferences'.

Once there switch the 'theme' to something else.
Scroll down to 'save information'. Select that.

Voila ... theme switched back.

For trendy high-income women only
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, June 11 2013 @ 01:15 PM EDT

Well, golly, what to say about this.

I guess we should be appreciative that Nestle has recognized that there is such a thing as a trendy, high-income woman.

Well, we know PJ is trendy, hence the blog. But is she high income? No? Sorry, PJ, no Nestle for you. After all, you had your chance to monetize Groklaw.

But, but, but what about trendy, high-income men? Is there no room at Nestle for them?

What about not-trendy low income women? Flo the server, take a hike.

And, finally, on behalf of us men who are (a) not trendy, (b) not high-income, and (c) not women, I have only one question to you Nestle drinkers: Will you marry me?

Nestlé introduces bottled water for “trendy, high-income” women

Professional Designers Call iOS7 'Ugly' And 'Inconsistent'
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, June 11 2013 @ 03:05 PM EDT

But a lot of professional designers aren't as enthusiastic about the iOS 7's new look. Since Apple's announcement yesterday, designers have called iOS 7 everything from "inconsistent" to just plain "ugly."

I'm not a professional designer but I agree with them :-)

As a Canadian living in Canada here's a suggestion for my American cousins...

Perhaps this July 4th would be a good time to have a "4th for the Fourth" rally to celebrate and stand up for the Fourth Amendment.

DoD Warns Employees of Classified Info in Public Domain
Authored by: albert on Tuesday, June 11 2013 @ 06:41 PM EDT
“DoD employees and contractors shall not, while accessing the web on unclassified government systems, access or download documents that are known or suspected to contain classified information.”

Secrecy News

This seems strange to me. Are they trying to keep DOD folks names out of the NSA internet monitoring database?

Spy vs Spy
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, June 11 2013 @ 08:32 PM EDT
Whatever the results of last weekend’s summit between Barack Obama and Xi Jinping, its timing was magnificent. The American president, one presumes, was taking his guest to task over China’s record of internet thievery – just as accounts emerged in his own country of massive cyber-intrusion and data mining by the government he runs. Moral of the story: everyone does it.

With these leaks, Snowden asks Americans to reconsider their verdict on the post-September 11 world. At this point the jury remains out, considering the merits of a retrial – but on past performance Snowden should prepare for an answer he already half-anticipates, but will not like.

Let's step back
Authored by: om1er on Tuesday, June 11 2013 @ 08:53 PM EDT
I would like to propose the following legislation:

All United States of America software systems used for National Security must be purchased retail, at full price, from established commercial vendors, such as from Microsoft or Oracle. No discounts will be permitted. Free and Open Source software are prohibited, as is pirated software.

All United States of America hardware systems used for National Security, especially disk drives and networking equipment, must be purchased from established commercial equipment vendors at full retail price. No discounts are permitted.

-----

My rationale is that with Free Software, the spooks are free to build enormous systems, totally secure, to spy on everyone, at a "low" cost. If the data center cost skyrockets, it could put a kink in their plans and budgets. Plus, if they use Microsoft Windows, then they can be paranoid about their systems, too.

It does bother me that the United States Government is so determined to collect so much information about anyone and everyone. Make the cost prohibitive to do so, and they won't do it anymore. Once 50% of the budget is classified, for "National Security," people will really start to notice, and do something about it.

I hate to see Free Software, given to the world by very talented people with the very best of intentions, used by the United States Government for such untrustworthy purposes. Prohibit Free Software use by the government.
