AFAIK it was A Differential Engine singular, complete with all the spare
gears needed to solve various actuarial problems, so one patent
covered the job lot, like a printing press, font box included.
On that basis Apple would get one patent to cover each model of
computer, and all software to run on the machine would be covered
under the single patent. I'm happy with software patents like that.

Admittedly 200 years later.

I don't know if they had access to the original machine (which was never
completed), but a replica was built recently to the original drawings, and it
worked just fine.
