The control tools that SHOULD work change the power to the light source of the
monitor.

xrandr works by altering the image to be displayed. A darker image is created by
reducing the amount of light passed through the LCD. The control is to the LCD,
not the light.

The basic problem is that this cannot help extend battery life. Otherwise, I
don't think there is any side effect other than the continued excess burning of
the CFC light. LED lights, on the other hand, should not have a problem.
