I know... bad form to respond to myself in most cases. Consider me adding my
comment under the "general topic of this topic" condition ;)
I wouldn't
be surprised if the following scenario occurred (or even is currently occurring)
given that it seems reasonable in the context of "Microsoft standard operating
procedure".
Step 1: enter negotiations to purchase good
product
Step 2: find out one is providing a competing bid against
Google
Step 3: ask anti-trust watchdog to inform Google that Google can
not purchase said product
Step 4: watch as Google is removed from the
negotiating/auction table
Step 5: offer a far lower amount for the
product then you otherwise would have in fair competition
I can't imagine
MS felt very good at the end result of the previous competitive bidding process
when they faced Google. They paid a lot more for a bunch of cell phone
patents then they perhaps otherwise should have given my opinion of the
reasonable value of those patents.
The above process would certainly
allow MS to offer a much lower bid then they otherwise might.

A spokesdroid was not quoted as telling the truth, that:
"Our sponsors don't know how to compete technically,
so they have paid us to pretend that this is some
kind of anti-trust problem", instead going on and on
about "the only viable competitor". This seems to
mean that the sponsors are not viable competitors,
and have no idea how to become viable competitors.
File under "not news"...

Consumer
Watchdog appears to be a few individuals lining their pockets with money from
unnamed sources. If I were Google, I wouldn't be so patient with this sort of
thing. I'm certain I could bury them once the funders names were made public.
