It's not that they are competitors. It's that all three are/were multi-platform
and as such made it easy for users to switch away.

WordPerfect only became a pure Windows application with v9 in the 2000 time
frame. I don't know the history but I think v4 was a CP/M product, v5 was a DOS
product, it originated on Data General, and there was a native linux version (a
port of the Santa Cruz product, I guess) of v8. v9 was available for linux but
was the Windows code compiled with Wine.

I used the native SCO v5.0 version. I've probably still got the floppies
somewhere.
