> The new xbox 360 has onerous conditions attached to it.

The new XBox is the XBox One. Is that short for Onerous ?

I think the Xbox One has already lost the next great console race.

At a certain point, reputation management becomes like "Snakes on a Plane." It is easy to have a cool title, and generate great buzz in advance of the product release. However, once the audience sees the goods, it's over.

With Xbox one, everyone that sees the goods, promptly panics and says "OMG! What are they thinking!" In the case of Xbox, the issues are:
- It requires a persistent internet connection, even though people live (or vacation) in places without internet. Additionally, some parent's don't like kids playing on the internet by themselves.
- In terms of application programmability, Microsoft clearly had the better processor last time around. This time, it looks like Sony.
- Microsoft had the first to launch position last time. This time it looks like Sony.
- Microsoft usually wins the hearts and minds of application developers. This time it looks like Sony.
- Microsoft usually has the "cool" factor. Recently, Microsoft's operating systems have not been cool.
- Microsoft doesn't have a portable gaming device. (Still???)

Much of the above is from semiaccurate.com. But now, other publications like The Register are badmouthing the Xbox One, too.

Eventually, correct bad press kills.

Talk about job security!

"We can't be bothered to improve our product, thats costly and takes time.
Instead, here's our expert to tell you why you love it!"

Dude, where are your ethics and your
long-term thinking? If you want reddit
to be more reliable than Microsoft,
don't act like Microsoft toadies on reddit.

Microsoft have really bungled their marketing on the Xbox One. The first bungle
was the choice of name.

The second bungle was the second hand issue. Microsoft promises that used games
will exist on their console. Sony just says that it will be up to publishers.
Everyone attacks MS expecting second hand sales on the PS4 to happen while
forgetting that publishers don't like second hand sales.

Yet Microsoft's marketing team don't give a statement pointing out:
- How many of the complainers use Steam.
- Why publishers don't like second hand sales.
- Sony is promising to do nothing should publishers decide to block second hand
sales.

Microsoft's marketing failures have made this worse for them. However, gamers
are known to fail at the 'not buying the product' part of a boycott:

So I'd expect the Xbox Ones success to come from which exclusive games it gets.
Nothing more.

Astroturfing

And for a lot of us, doing such activities is not admirable.
