When the king of Mali made his pilgrimage to Mecca, he left a
trail of economic wreckage that lasted for almost twenty years in
his wake, because he dumped so much gold into the local
economy.

When the Spanish returned from South America, they brought so
much gold with them, that the Spanish economy was ruined.

In both instances, people could trade that gold for items that they
wanted, in places they were not local, and obtain value for the
product.

With printed pieces of paper, there is no inherent value. It is useful
only for the duration of time that a gun pointed at one says it is
useful.
