The 'gap' between the rich and poor was much smaller then, and not just in
wealth, but in ethics as well.
What amazes me is that folks today think that our society hasn't changed. It
has. Dramatically.
The Constitution is one of the most awesome documents ever written. From a bunch

that the modern phenomenon of the farms being in hock to the bank isn't that
modern.
I gather a lot of the big farmers - like and probably including George
Washington - spent most of their time teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.
There's no point having land allegedly worth lots, if you don't have the cash to
pay the hired hands.
