Should Be Java vs. Dalvik, Not Java vs. Android
Authored by: tknarr on Monday, June 03 2013 @ 12:17 PM EDT

Android/Dalvik (I think technically Dalvik refers to the virtual machine, while Android is the implementation of the APIs) is incompatible in the same way an automatic-transmission car's controls are incompatible with a stick-shift's. But people who want an automatic don't want the clutch or the gearshift to shift gears manually, that's why they bought an automatic in the first place, and the controls that are there in an automatic are laid out and work the same as in a stick so you won't actually have any problem applying what you learned in a stick to an automatic. Going the other way you'll have to learn the clutch and how to shift but the gas pedal, steering wheel and the rest all work the same so you shouldn't have any problems with them.

So what?

Oracle whining about everyone missing the "incontovertable evidence"
that Android is incompatible with Java, is just that... whining. Whether you
call it Dalvik or bubba.

Oracle is missing the incontrovertable evidence that ANDROID IS NOT JAVA!

News flash, my flip-flops are incompatible with my electric toaster. Calling
them pedal pushers doesn't seem to help.

I'm waiting for Google to Loose and Replace with a BETTER New Language
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, June 03 2013 @ 04:45 PM EDT
Google's talent can do a better language than Java in their sleep.

Of course they should not need to -- the entire Oracle lawsuit is essentially
frivolous anti-progress IP trolling regardless of the outcome.

But whether Google starts with Ruby, Python, or C++, or just goes for a whole
new rewrite, in the end Google can outperform anything that Oracle can do.

This is because of the Google open source culture and the fact that the best
computer scientist want to work there. They are not afraid to stand on the
shoulders of giants, and a goodly number of the giants work there. Google
has more talent than Apple, Oracle, and Microsoft combined.

I don't know if Google can always win in the marketplace, but in building a
language replacement for Java, the game would be over at the announcement;
and Google can well afford to write the translators and validators to help the
third party development community port their code. The entire transition
takes at most 18 months; and it is substantially done in 6 months.

Oracle is a loser. Doesn't matter what happens in court.
