You were born to be an HR God.

A friend from the bay area said there recently was an article in the
Mercury where Jobs complained about the job Bud was doing. Not being
either a good enough manager or technical leader. Maybe Bud decided he
had enough.
and for you trivia buffs, here's some history: Susan Barnes joined the
Macintosh group as the assistant controller in 1983-84. Her boss, Debbie
Coleman soon became the manufacturing manager of the Mac Factory,
so Susan became the divisional controller, reporting to Jobs. At the
end of the following, fiscal quarter, Jobs was so upset at the way Susan
closed the books that he decided to fire her on the spot. As was his
way of doing things at the time, he informed me first of this
decision. Knowing
that HR would someday be in my future, I asked him if he had discussed
his issues directly with Susan. "No." So I told him he couldn't fire
her on
the spot. He asked me what he should do. I told him to give her 90 days
to prove herself and to define what it was she needed to prove. Susan never
knew that she was within a nano-second of being nuked. Steve gave her the
90 day plan, she recovered and later joined Steve as one of the first NeXT
employees. At the time she and Bud were not an item. End of history
lesson.
As a followup to Nathan's suggestion that Bud's leaving was somehow
related to his wife's role at NeXT, the Dow Jones News service has a story
in which it remarks that Bud's wife, Susan Kelly Barnes, left NeXT in
May, 1991.
I am very surprised. This would certainly seem to indicate a

Mr. Steve Ballmer
Senior Vice President, Systems
Microsoft Corporation
One Microsoft Way
Redmond, Washington 98052

Dear Mr. Ballmer:

We are asking for a clarification of the Microsoft policy regarding support
of, and new releases of application products on both Windows and OS/2.

I represent the FOUNDATION development organization in Andersen Consulting.
Our organization develops CASE tools for mainframe computers and for 386 and
486 class machines. Our strategy is to support both Windows and OS/2 because
both are important to our primary customers, the "World 1000"
corporations and
similar sized governmental and other organizations. We have also developed a
strategy of integrating other premier products into our overall product when
they also address the world market, the quality and the platforms which we are
targeting. Based on these criteria, Microsoft products have been given
serious consideration in our future directions. We are actively
investigating, and in some cases doing initial development with Word, Excel
and Project. Other products are planned for future investigation.

Up to now we have been told that your software strategy was to make as much of
your internal code as possible to be common across multiple platforms
including Windows and OS/2. We were further told that while Windows products
would most likely be the first on the market, the OS/2 products would be
following shortly, normally no more than two to three months later. This,
while not ideal for us, was acceptable.

We were recently told by Reed Koch, product manager for Microsoft Word for
Windows, that the next OS/2 version of Word would be "at least a year
after
the Windows release." Other recent press comments have further called
into
question the Microsoft commitment to the OS/2 products. Judy West, our
Microsoft national account executive, just informed me that there may not be
further OS/2 releases, but rather we would have to run under Windows under
OS/2. We have also heard unofficially that Visual Basic (which we have found
to be a very good product) had an OS/2 in Beta testing, and that this was
pulled back with no announced or intended availability date.

[Ed: Handwritten annotation "See page 2"]

From our standpoint as a systems and a product integrator, any backing off of
the policy as originally presented to us is clearly unacceptable from both a
marketing and technical standpoint. If Microsoft has changed its policy to be
one of not providing comparable support (this includes making features
available
in the same time frame), this could be a stumbling block to our making more
strategic use of Microsoft products.

We have asked Judy West to set up a conference call with you to help us
understand your product strategy regarding Windows and OS/2, so that we can
develop our own strategies.

[Ed: Handwritten annotation: "Will you do a conf
call"]

Very truly yours,

I have already done a draft of the wrap-up slides. I would like
you to look these over. I will have neffb forward you a set.
You can still make any changes you wish.

I agree we should do the OS/2 demo. I also think Steveb's talk
is the place d
to do it.

Can you please forward a copy of the warp-up slides to Brad for his
review. I think these slides are done and won't need much in the
way of changes, but it's important to get Brad a copy for review.

Thanks,

Brad has suggested (and I wholeheartedly agree) that we should work
a deno of the OS/2 "bad app" during Steve's talk at the PDC. We
may want to add a little time to hls talk. It's important to go
over the OS/2 2.0 vs. Windows info and I think Steveb is the guy to
do it. i would rather add a few minutes to his talk than add a
separate session.

Ericfo can help arrange the demo. You should also bring this up
with Steve in case he wants to add a slide or two about this as
well.

Thanks,
Thanks for the concern - I see your designation of duties to be wise,
and absolutely the best thing to guarantee success of the project. As you
can imagine, we saw alot of great work going on and hoped to see it conti-
nue. We'll look forward to working with Eric and Tom, and Compaq will be
relieved to know how many top-notch people are helping from our end.
