Pedal arrangement i motorcars has been specific by make. How one steer a horse
by using the reins is not universal either.
Anything that works goes.

It didn't stop Ford and the other manufacturers in UK having the direction

Simpler examples are an electrical outlet or phone plug.
Yes, each country has their own standards (API) but with that knowledge adaptors
(mid-ware) can be made to allow equipment (programs) from other countries can
still work.
Also, it allows for new ideas to built based on simple base.
Examples:
Refrigerators, stoves, clocks, computers, vacuums that allowed for food storage,
food cooking, time keeping, games/accounting software/internet, delivery
tubes/clean floors.
Phones, modems, fax machines, auto-dialers that allowed for person-to-person
calls, internet, business letters immediate delivery, call rooms interrupting
dinner.

I love the car analogy. When teaching Object Oriented
concepts to new folks, I always that same Car analogy.
Same way that you don't have be a mechanical engineer to use
a car and do amazing feats of racing or driving, or simply
drive back and forth to the office, interfaces and APIs allow
people to build new systems and new things without being
overwhelmed by the details of the services and APIs they rely

fork lifts / lift trucks are the same way. i'm not sure
whether it's manufacturer preference or what, but some have
three handles and some have two
this is the way i liked:
1) controls tilt forward/backward
2) controls lift up/down
3) controls strafing left/right
this is the way that always confused me because i was used
to the other - but it was easier to control once i got used
to it because there are less levers to manipulate:
1) controls lift up/down and tilt forward/backward (1
handle, 4 corners, 4 functions)
2) controls strafing left/right
