Bank of Canada cries fraud on $90K 'Duffy buck' cartoon
Authored by: JamesK on Wednesday, May 29 2013 @ 09:25 PM EDT
The Bank of Canada says an editorial cartoon depicting a $90,000 bill bearing the likeness of Senator Mike Duffy runs afoul of its copyright on Canadian bank notes and has ordered it taken off the web.

Mike Duffy is a Canadian senator, who was caught in expense fraud. The scandal is create a big stink in Ottawa, that leads right to the Prime Minister's office. Nigel Wright gave him over $90K to settle this, in violation of the law and then caused the auditors report to soften what it said about him. Mike Duffy is in the same party as the Prime Minister. Two other senators, on similar charges, but not in the Prime Minister's party, were dealt with much more severely in the auditor's report. So, this could well become a criminal matter, beyond the expense fraud.

The Rijksmuseum shows the way...
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, May 30 2013 @ 11:38 AM EDT
The Dutch Rijksmuseum releases pictures of 125.000 works of art, and encourages
you to use the pictures for whatever takes your fancy - t-shirts, postcards,
etc.

https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/rijksstudio

A step in the right direction - the Rijksmuseum is a public institution and the
art-work should be in the public domain, not behind pay walls.

Authored by: JamesK on Thursday, May 30 2013 @ 02:17 PM EDT
For the past couple of weeks, there has been a lot in the news about a supposed video with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack with known drug dealers. One of the others in the video has since been murdered. The longer this drags out the more "interesting" information is turning up. So far, five of his staff members have quit or been fired in relation to this.

No Place To Hide
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, May 30 2013 @ 08:19 PM EDT
A group of researchers at IBM’s Almaden Research Centre in San Jose, California, however, is here to help. According to Eben Haber, the group’s leader, the problem is that firms are trying to understand their customers by studying their “demographics” (age, sex, marital status, dwelling place, income and so on) and their existing buying habits. That approach, he believes, is flawed. What they really need is a way to discover the “deep psychological profiles” of their customers, including their personalities, values and needs. And he and his team think they can provide it.
