Windows 8 is one reason I switched to Linux
Authored by: OpenSourceFTW on Monday, May 27 2013 @ 01:49 AM EDT
Seeing that Microsoft wasn't very interesting in giving me what I wanted in a
new version helped coax me over to GNU/Linux.*

So thank you Microsoft, I now am enjoying using my computer much for than
before. If that was your goal, I congratulate you.

*Microsoft being an arrogant, whiny patent troll helped a bit too XD.

Microsoft blues...
Authored by: RPN on Monday, May 27 2013 @ 07:25 AM EDT
I mostly use Linux but do maintain a Windows box or two to keep in touch.

This was exactly what hit me installing the preview then a cheapo upgrade. Nice
fast install but then it comes very close to demanding you have an MS account.
Not going to happen. Then you get dumped in the stupid Metro screen and my
instant reaction was this is about selling apps to me. And you can't use some of
the default ones without an MS account. No thank you. And Bing is still
rubbish.

Sorry MS you've reinforced my decision to rely on Linux and not you for my
computing needs.

Richard.

The Economist got it wrong
Authored by: Wol on Monday, May 27 2013 @ 03:10 PM EDT
And got it wrong again.

I dunno whether iOS and MacOSX (have I got them right) are based on the same
kernel, but to berate MS for trying "to put the same OS on tablets and
PCs" and then give Android as a shining example of getting it right ...
???

Hang on a sec ... isn't Android (for tablets and phones) based on the same
kernel as Linux (common usage) (for desktops and servers), ie linux?

So much so that I could compile Android for my PC, or GNU/Linux for my phone,
should I care to do so?

Cheers,
Wol

Windows NT 4.0 the reason I switched
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, May 28 2013 @ 11:01 AM EDT
I had a dual 486 50mhz pc with win NT 4.0 on it and I wanted to set up a serial
port to auto answer a modem, and another to auto sync with a PDA. Windows NT
4.0 Workstation said I must have a "SERVER" license to configure more
than 1 serial port for a auto mode that launched an application with activity.
So I got NT 4.0 server and it worked. But then all my applications balked that
they were licensed for "Workstation Only". I started immediately
migrating to Red Hat linux. And I have never been sorry.
