MS-Office 365, MS-Office <other>, MS-ish virus scanner....
Oh, and a mouse and external HDD.... Methinks the folks who
assembled the www-page need a few clues.

Other than that: The revenge of the netbooks...

Javascript enabled???

When I follow the link a yellow box says:
We're sorry, it appears that JavaScript is disabled in your
browser. To view the full content of BestBuy.com, please
enable JavaScript.

Well, no thanks. I'll pass on that.
And actually, the site seems to work fine without it.

Chromebook and the Big Box Store War
Authored by: hardmath on Monday, May 27 2013 @ 07:36 AM EDT

Out of respect for parent's concern about a javascript on the underlying Newpick page, I won't post the link here (as is our wont).

However the point I took from the link is not so much the possibility of making a purchase of a Chromebook specifically from Best Buy as underlining Microsoft's weakening dominance of shelf space in big box retail outfits. I believe such dominance has long been obtained by Microsoft's payments to the the retailers not to carry alternative operating systems.

I'll confirm whether these are actually available at my local Best Buy, just as I've occasionally noted the results of walking into a big box store, here or in cities I visit, and asking about Linux OS in consumer computers.

Let's report for now that on a recent trip to Office Depot the sales staff were eager to advise that in-store sales of Chromebooks would begin soon, probably in June (next month).

It needs to be said that this replaces not only the old line that there's not enough consumer demand to make Linux a profitable use of shelf space, and the more recent sales patter that if I were to purchase a Windows 8 computer, it is simple to make it revert to a Windows 7 interface! Strong selling point, that? Apparently not strong enough.
