Innovative Sony product such as BetaMax and the Walkman enabled consumers to
listen to and watch media they recorded themselves, or recorded from a friend's
copy. As we now know, this destroyed the motivation for developing creative
works, killing the music, movie and sports industries. Only newspapers, with
their constantly fresh content, have thrived.
Sony had technology and brand name to make a really excellent MP3 player, and
evolve that into a multipurpose communication device. But MP3 players are only
used for pirated music, and that would threaten the music division's profits.
And besides, you couldn't possibly become the world's largest and most
profitable corporation by selling gussied-up MP3 players and music for $1.
