Microsoft Invents Voice-Controlled Camera for Windows Phone
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, May 20 2013 @ 10:30 AM EDT
There should be 0% chance that this would be approved since it's blatantly obvious and there has to be previous art for it. Unfortunately, knowing the USPTO... Link Last week the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Microsoft that reveals their invention relating to voice-controlled camera operations for a smartphone. The new feature would be great for self-portraits or for group photos that could allow you to join in. While it's not as cool as saying "OK Google" take a photo in a hands free mode, it's still interesting to see that voice commands will be coming to smartphones to control camera functionality in the future, and particularly from a Windows Smartphone.

Whatever became of MeeGo?
Authored by: Gringo_ on Monday, May 20 2013 @ 11:22 AM EDT

MeeGo is alive and well, and innovating according to Techcrunch

Furthermore, they have come up with this idea they call the Other Half, which refers to removable hardware shells that snap on to the back of the handset and can be changed and customised by the user. But the feature goes further than interchangeable shells...

Jolla’s Other Half isn't just decoration but links to the software on the handset — using an unconfirmed bridging technology that sounds to my ear like NFC — allowing content on the phone to be tied to the addition of a new shell, or even for new physical features to be incorporated and supported.

Kind of brings to mind the heady days of the Pocket PC, where you could buy a plethora of clip-on modules for everything from GPS functionality to wall projectors for your presentations. This concept is bound to return in some form or another, but with BlueTooth things don't have to physically clip on any more.

T-Mobile's MetroPCS drops net neutrality lawsuit, leaving Verizon to challenge rules alone
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, May 20 2013 @ 01:29 PM EDT
Fierce Wireless article

Now that it's owned by T-Mobile US, MetroPCS has decided to drop its lawsuit against the FCC's net neutrality rules for wireless and wired networks, leaving Verizon Wireless as the sole challenger to the rules.

Verizon and MetroPCS have both been vocal opponents of the rules in court but MetroPCS indicated in a court filing on Friday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit that it no longer wants to fight the rules. T-Mobile had not opposed the rules and completed its acquisition of MetroPCS earlier this month.

Phone companies win patent battle over 'ringback' services
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, May 20 2013 @ 01:44 PM EDT
5 year patent court battle over (unless it goes to the Supremes of course)

(Reuters) The U.S. patent appeals court has handed major phone companies a victory in a five-year patent battle, upholding a lower court's interpretation of telephone message marketing patents that kept the companies clear of any infringement.

Mississippi-based Greenville Communications LLC sued AT&T Mobility LLC, Nextel Operations Inc, T-Mobile USA Inc and Verizon Wireless in 2007, alleging the companies had infringed its patents.

For setting go to All Apps > settings thingy top right > Nova Settings.

How to Set Up Your Android Launcher

The Google SG4 will of course put a stop to all this TouchWiz related nonsense.

I'm sorry, but the clicky pre-pends groklawstatic.ibiblio.org.
Appears to violate OSD3, OSD5, OSD6 and OSD7.
Looks like a subject for Groklaw analysis.

LulzSec hacker: 'Internet is a world devoid of empathy'
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, May 20 2013 @ 05:17 PM EDT
BBC video 13 min.

This gave me mixed feelings: seething with rage at the incompetence of governments and companies to secure their networks; and eager to punish these young twerps who ignore "No Trespassing" signs, and climb thru open windows. But no lack of empathy.

The Apple wormhole where taxes disappear
Authored by: SpaceLifeForm on Monday, May 20 2013 @ 07:55 PM EDT
Link

Incorporated in 1980, AOI "has no physical presence" in Ireland "or any other address" and doesn't have any employees, the Senate report said. Its board meetings have almost always been held in the U.S., and its assets are managed by an Apple subsidiary in Nevada.

"According to Apple, AOI's net income made up 30% of Apple's total worldwide net profits from 2009-2011, yet Apple also disclosed to the subcommittee that AOI did not pay any corporate income tax to any national government during that period," the report said.

Apple said "it had not determined" whether AOI was managed and controlled in the U.S., which would make its profits taxable, the report said, noting that the subsidiary hadn't filed a corporate tax return in the last five years.

The Senate Hearing tomorrow with Apple CEO Tim Cook should be interesting. I'm sure he will argue that the tax rates should be lowered.

Prenda lawyer has a bad day

Motion to stay sanctions - Denied.

Kicked off another case:

Hansmeier is also getting kicked off a case he was working on that was totally unrelated to Prenda's scheme of making copyright accusations over alleged pornography downloads. He had a side business in which he helped his friends and family object to class-action settlements and then retrieve cash settlements in return for withdrawing their objections.

So why do US authorities go to great lengths to support this company? Relative
to the high end of the scale it is contributing a pittance to the common good.
Probably its sales to the US Govt are greater than its tax contribution ...
