We have known for a long time that MS Office docs don't conform to the ISO
standard.
That is not the point here.
All that MS has to do is to issue an update to Office that slightly changes the
.docx structure in ways that stops other bits of software from reading the docs
properly.
MS's excuse will be that 'it is our format anyway so we can do what we like with
it' simply because it is not ISO compliant.
If soneone was to release an app (for use of a better word) that outputs docs
that comform to the ISO standard then the MS Patent lawyers will be down on them
like a tonne of bricks. There is MS Patented stuff in the STD and that was one
of the biggest objections to the adoption of the Standard at the time. MS Paid a
lot of money to get all that done as was documented only far too well on this
site.
AFAIK, there are no FRAND agreements on those patents either.
