In fact, SMTP has been a sort of half-baked idea from its inception. It started
out as a simple protocol (the "S" is literally for "simple")
intended only for smaller networks and low volumes of text-only traffic. It has
not scaled nor aged very well.
If I would trust anyone with finding a good replacement for SMTP, it would be
Google. They should know what is required of a protocol that would better solve
the many problems with SMTP that have been sort of patched over the years, but
not really solved.

There are SMTP add-ons (I wouldn't call them extensions) that allow just that.
Unfortunately they tend to be badly set up by admins that are either incompetent
or are trying to be clever and making a mess (I once came across one for a
particular domain that supported sending from any BT DSL line) such that they
are useless. Banning the sending of mail from DHCP DSL lines would be a good
start but no-one will allow that. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
