They will welcome you with open arms. Really, I'm serious. You will find
others of your kindred there. You will be appreciated there, unlike here. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The entire tech world is littered with the skeletons of
once-great has-beens. Old microprocessors, old protocols,
old standards, and more. It's natural. Continuous R&D
result in newer versions to take their places.
If Google did come up with a new standard for email
transfer, I'm sure they would find some way to keep a
compatible interface to the rest of the Internet via SMTP.
And meanwhile, they are free to take any new standards they
develop to standards bodies for review and possible
acceptance. And I would applaud them for doing it. As long
as they don't pull a Microsoft and buy the acceptance.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

This is and has been Google's M.O.
They champion new developing ideas hoping it will spur
innovation in new categories. Sometimes ideas don't pan out
very well. The only course of action is to lay it down in a
six foot hole. That doesn't mean they are being too quick on
the draw - rather, look at it as they are more willing to take
chances that other companies aren't
