If you don't view geeks as artists...
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, May 16 2013 @ 01:22 PM EDT

... I think you'd be surprised how many of us are involved in the arts as sidelines or hobbies or "life love" even while we handle logic and technology as a career.

If you review a number of my authorings - difficult since I tend to author almost completely anonymously - then you may notice a tendency of a rather large amount of philosophy forming my perspectives.

It's my humble opinion - from personal observations - that a greater portion of geeks are:

less likely to hold an extreme view
more likely to tend to a balance and greater exposure
more likely to have a greater sense of morals and ethics
then non-geeks.

Ultimately though - here's some of that philosophy I mentioned ;)

it really depends how you define the separation of geek from non geek
Some would view the study of Latin to be pretty geeky... yet... wouldn't such a study be a requirement to properly understand Law?

"Group dynamics are awesome."
Authored by: llanitedave on Friday, May 17 2013 @ 05:38 AM EDT
In Groklaw's case, that's turned out to be true. But, I
fear Groklaw is the exception, not the rule. Groklaw tends
to attract intelligent, thoughtful, independent, and well-
meaning people, who collaborate for the right reasons.

Far too many groups, and we can all think of numerous
examples, have catered to the vile, the venal, the bigoted,
the hateful, and the narrow-minded. Those group dynamics
are awful, at least in their consequences.

But as PJ says, Education is never a waste. And while
pathological groups will always be with us, the best way to
minimize their numbers and influence is for sites like
Groklaw to maximize theirs. And we can help do that by
spreading our geeky values to the young whenever and
wherever possible, giving them a very positive alternative
to ignorance and hate.

Congratulations, PJ, you've made a very powerful difference,
and set a fine example. And the struggle continues.

Of course we need to communicate -- that goes without saying!
