Don't Canadians pay a tax on all blank media to compensate artists for piracy?

Since when has that stopped a bunch of shyster lawyers from going about their
buiness?

IMHO, this is just the Canadian branch of Righthaven getting going.

I'd fully expect that the people they 'serve' will not be rich enough to be able
to afford a lawyer to fight their case so they will stump up the cash in the
hope that it will all go away. IT won't.

Ubuntu & 'apt-get' are not the answer to Life, The Universe & Everything which
is of course, "42" or is it 1.618?

I think I will start importing my media for Canada so that
I am legally covered if I accidentally download and save something that can be
contested. My defense, I have already paid the copyright fee once go collect
from the government.

My recollection is that Canadians pay a tax on blank media to compensate the CRIAA for "piracy." Whether any "artists" ever see a looney out of this slush fund is arguable.

It's almost like levying a tax on all PCs sold without an OS, and then sending the collected taxes to Microsoft, who promises to "do the right thing" with it.

(Oh wait - we already have that "blank PC" tax, don't we? Only it's collected by Dell, and Compaq/HP, and Lenovo, and Gateway, and...)
