The driving force behind medical costs is insurance, and insurance
premiums.
The highest expense for medical providers is malpractice insurance,
and related insurance coverage.
The second highest expense is collecting money that is owed from
insurance companies, government agencies, and other third party
payers.
Pharma patents merely ensure that drugs that cost a dime per dose to

Chain pushed very hard for them to patent penicillin but Florey refused - he
thought it would be unethical.
(Fleming had nothing to do with the refinement, stabilisation, extraction,
production and clinical trials of penicillin BTW).

Ever consider how much money there is in doing nothing more then selling
vitamin/mineral supplements?
Pharma is big money to a LOT of
people.

It is my understanding (and I am in no means an expert) that big pharmaceutical
companies have legitimately high research costs that they need a way to recoup
if they are to survive. And currently the only way to recoup them is through
patents.
Why you want them around probably changes depending on the group, some probably
think they actually help progress the medical field (I can't say whether or not
this is true, and would be interested in hearing opinions, and facts about it),
some probably want them to exist for a variety of personal reasons (ie politics,
having friends in the business, being in the buisness yourself, ect), and a
large number probably don't want to upset the current state of things (even
larger when you count by income I expect).[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
