And that is the biggest problem with the text based medium
that is the Internet. It does not convey the nonverbal cues
that are the grease of verbal communication. Netiquette ought
to be taught at schools, because it is rather alien for the
neophyte.

The thing is, I read the original post as a critique of what
the American Dream had morphed into, for some people. As such,
it is an entirely licit use of the language, though it would
benefit from some parens to give those nonverbal cues a verbal
representation.

IMHO there was no slight to anyone, just a honest
misunderstanding, and a completely reasonable one. Just let it
lie.
