-----------"Google has been a disappointment to me in this
respect. Though Google employees have come out strongly at
times against software patents - it was never clear that
they speak for the company. Indeed I have seen Google the
corporation remain mute where there have been opportunities
to speak out against software patents in general. I have
hypothesized that they cannot make sweeping statements
denouncing software patents while at the same time defending
themselves from trolls via pressing the attack with their
own software patents. "------------
It is always true that whatever you say can be used against
you. This does not only apply to people arrested.
Google can't attack software patents in general and then
defend themselves with patent counterclaims in a patent
lawsuit, or file retaliatory lawsuits, with their own
patents. They would have to admit that they said all, AND
THEIR OWN, software patents are invalid and shouldn't have
been issued. This would be a losing posture.

It would most likely be better for Google and for the rest of the world if
software
patents were completely abolished (substitute any company for Google
that isn't
a patent troll). But without doubt, it would be very bad for Google
and slightly
good for the rest of the world if _only_ Google gave up their
software patents, so
it isn't going to happen. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

First on the topic of Microsoft and Apple:
Absolutely, do not trust them
- they've shown they are more then willing to have the only software patents if
they can arrange it and they are more then willing to use them
aggressively
On the topic of Google:
The great conundrum - how do you
fight a Law you don't believe in, yet also defend yourself against the Law while
the Law is still in place?
It's possible in those closed door meetings
Corporations have with Politicians that Google is saying to get rid of all
software patents and that they are willing to give up theirs to have a clear
Law.
Are they? I don't know.
