No way to be sure but...

From observation Linux is faster.

I had an old P3-667 IBM ThinkPad with Bodhi Linux installed. It ran like a
demon. Gave it to a friend for her son to use, she installed Windows XP
SP2 and it ran like molasses in January.

Also my son got asked to help diagnose his buddy's girlfriend's old white
box P3, don't know the speed. Ubuntu 12.04 ran quite quickly on it, when
we reinstalled Windows SP3 it ran slower.

We didn't run any test suites, the above is by observation only, but I'm
pretty certain of the differences. On both machines I used Firefox, Libre
Office, and VLC. Note that once the applications were open they worked
fine, they just took a long time to start.

PJ, the insights in the article (link is to a repost) about what proprietary software development is like at a large, ossified corporation transcends the question of whether the author was a real bonafide Microsoft developer.

As a software engineer myself, I can tell you that the author of the article seems to have inside knowledge of NT kernel development, and is clearly a low level developer himself. More than that, the article rings true to another software developer.

Hesitating to make a news pick out of it because you can't be sure of its authenticity misses the point. This was a rant directed to a limited audience - other low level software developers. What he is saying may be applied more broadly to organizations other than just Microsoft, and is not as shocking as it may seem for that reason. Personally I am satisfied that you don't make it a news pick, because I don't want Microsoft to take this to heart and wake up. I rather you leave them to die.
