This is what you get when those with grossly over-inflated egos get involved in
engineering. Much the same reason that Gates was completely and utterly unable
to produce software of acceptable quality.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

You'd think that requiring the crews to wear helmets, body armour and oxygen
tanks might have given them pause for thought that perhaps this was a little too
risky.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

They have had no deaths since 1994, an amazing record considering how dangerous
open wheel racing is. The FIA has very strict specifications for the cars and
driver safety bits, and they are strictly enforced. The result is a return to
driving skill and strategy. Engineering is important, but engineering alone
cannot win races.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

... but they can make massively expensive mistakes because
they can afford them where we can't.
Then there is the question of whether you really need that
much money to have that much ego, or if you can artificially
hyperinflate the ego some other way.

It may have started when my compatriot Michael Fay turned up in
San Diego with a boat bigger than anything Dennis Conner had seen.
So Dennis the Menace flicked out a fast cat to race circles round it.
The objects they're playing with in San Francisco aren't boats, they're
designed to operate with the hulls out of the water. They're not birds,
they're not planes, and recent events prove they're not Superman.
'Bout time to drag out the Deed of Gift and do some more lawyer lunching.
