> just what did average people in England get out of all those imperial
adventures, anyway, except for better cuisine?

Better cuisine? If those "uncivilised barbarians" who moved to
England,
and opened up eating establishments improved English cuisine, then it
must have been pretty revolting to begin with. Even with their
improvements, it is still a pretty bad cuisine.

You miss the point. What was the REAL reason for the War of Independence? And no
it wasn't lack of representation. That was the excuse. For most of the war, the
majority were opposed to independance. The British messed up, as usual...

Popular history is pretty much NEVER accurate!

Anyway, why would I want to hold England up as a shining example? I'm a
EUROPEAN. I happen to be half English, of which I'm proud, but I'm not blind to
their failings, especially as I am also German. And Scottish. And despite my
status as a lifelong English resident, those other two nationalities have a
stronger emotional hold...

Cheers,
Wol
