The source of the confusion

From what I can see, you're describing the real American Dream.

While the others are describing the american dream outlined by Dire Straights:

american dream held by a few as envisioned by Patent Attorney's who want to collect money for nothin'
Now that's insulting - even though I'm not American - having the bulk of the population likened to Lawyers ;)

It's a big country, and there is more than one dream ...

(I wrote the post to which you are replying)

I know about your dream, too, and I definitely share it. That is not the
problem, and my impression is, that was not the problem with the original post
of this thread, either.

But the problem is, there is obviously more than one American dream. There is
the dream of those who are intoxicated with what some call the "logic of
empire" and then there are the dreams of ordinary people who do not want to
be oppressed. It is those who believe in the logic of empire and who believe
that they are entitled to a cut of everybody else's money (including the
population of their own country, of course), whose current dream is to make
everyone to pay perpetual tribute for the "intellectual property"
which they have managed to get codified into law in the US. I don't have the
impression at all that this is a dream which most people would share -- if it
were widely understood that this is exactly what is going on, but the basic
problem is that most people do not seem to care. Life is good in the US, after
all.

Unfortunately, the above dream is most definitely an aspect of the American
dream, these days, and it seems to get a lot of support from the politicians,
too. And one of the reasons why it is part of the American dream and not some
other country's dream is that no other country is powerful enough to use the
combination of threats, blandishments, and seductions which the US can and does
apply. But just to be perfectly clear, this dream is not my dream. Or perhaps it
is, since I am forced to experience it as a nightmare.
